Former West Ham striker Carlton Cole is looking for a way back into English football, with Southend United.

The ex-England international, 33, is training with the League One Shrimpers following a recent spell in Indonesia.

Cole, who also had a brief stint in the USA with Sacramento Republic last autumn before leaving the club after just four appearances, was recommended to Southend manager Phil Brown by his former Hammers boss Sam Allardyce.

Brown will run the rule over the forward in training before deciding whether to offer him a deal.

Cole’s most recent outing in the English game came in May 2015, in West Ham’s 2-0 defeat at Newcastle.

He then endured a truncated time at Celtic before moving abroad.

The Chelsea graduate, who won the Premier League at Stamford Bridge, has also played for Aston Villa, Charlton and Wolves over the course of his career.
