Liverpool 4-2 Hoffenheim (6-3 agg), Champions League, plus Carabao Cup LATEST: Re-live the Anfield action and second-round ties as they happened

Only four games into Liverpool's season, we know them already. Enthralling to watch going forwards but characterised by uncertainty at the back, Jurgen Klopp's team are irresistible and vulnerable all at the same time.

How far it can take them in terms of winning trophies is open to question. But in terms of a spectacle, the hot ticket is Anfield and last night it was impossible to take your eyes off Liverpool.

Three goals up inside 21 minutes against a team whose coach said he had come without fear, Liverpool embarrassed Julian Nagelsmann's optimism through goals from Emre Can (2) and Mo Salah. With Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane on point, Liverpool flowed forwards like lava.

The tie that keeps giving goals. The German side have just over 10 minutes to score another three goals as Sandro Wagner pulls one back. The striker rises highest from a Andrej Kramaric cross (yes he formerly of Leicester) to head back across Mignolet.

21:06
GOAL! LIVERPOOL 4-1 Hoffenheim (6-2 agg) - Roberto Firmino (63 mins)

Hoffenheim have desperately disappointed defensively all game and Liverpool's fourth sums it up. In possession at the back, a pass to captain Hogt is short. In a 50-50 with Henderson the latter wins it and is through on goal with Hogt trailing in his wake as the last outfield player. Instead of shooting though, Henderson rolls the ball across to a supporting Firmino who taps it in.

The Germans make their second change of the night as Gnabry is replaced by another forward in Adam Szalai. Gnabry is not happy as he heads straight down the tunnel.

20:59
Liverpool chance - Georginio Wijnaldum

54 mins: The hosts may have scored three times this season but their finishing has left a lot to be desired. After a good run and fine one-two with Salah, Wijnaldum is through on goal but can only blast an effort straight at Oliver Baumann.

Burnley send on their record £15m signing Chris Wood to make his debut four minutes before half-time. The former Leeds striker replaces Jon Walters, who looked to have been seriously injured in a first-minute challenge from Richie Smallwood but recovered after lengthy treatment to play on. Wood nearly scored with his first touch as well as he connected with Scott Arfield’s cross-shot, but David Raya made a fine double save. Walters’ injury means we have six minutes of added time at the end of the first half.

20:32
Liverpool booking - Jordan Henderson

45 mins: The Liverpool captain is booked for a poor challenge on Kerem Demirbay.

20:27
Sportsmail's Laurie Whitwell at the bet365 Stadium

Mark Hughes has picked a pretty strong side against League One Rochdale, with Joe Allen, Bruno Martins Indi, and Bojan all featuring. It was Allen who gave the hosts the lead with a header from Erik Pieter’s cross that went in via a defection off Harrison McGahey.

Rochdale are continuing to try to play good football but without really stretching Stoke, who have Peter Crouch up front causing a curious picture at times. He is occasionally moving onto left-back Kgosietsile Ntlhe, who is an entire foot smaller but determined to give aerial duels a go. Suffice to say, he is losing so far.

38 mins: The defender is booked for a wild stamp on Mane.

20:21
Liverpool chance - Roberto Firmino

Liverpool should have their fourth of the night as Salah rolls in Firmino but he can only shoot straight at the goalkeeper from within 10 yards of the net.

20:21
Sportsmail's Chris wheeler at Ewood Park

Worrying scenes as Burnley celebrate their opening goal from Jack Cork against bitter rivals Blackburn at Ewood Park. A Blackburn fan got onto the pitch and confronted the Burnley players as they walked back to the centre-circle for the restart. A melee ensued, although it was difficult to see which Burnley players were involved, and a second Rovers fan also ran on from the stands. Burnley boss Sean Dyche was clearly unhappy that the stewards did not intervene sooner, and the two supporters were only apprehended as they left the pitch.

20:20
Sportsmail's Craig Hope at St James' Park

Two goals in three minutes have stunned Newcastle, but Forest striker Jason Cummings took them both brilliantly. The hosts were static at the back on both occasions but Cummings took full advantage, first with a near-post header and then will a measured lob.

30 mins: The teenage talent gets booked for a block that the NFL would be proud of on Wijnaldum.

20:15
GOAL! Liverpool 3-1 HOFFENHEIM (5-2 agg) - Mark Uth (28 mins)

He scored in the first leg and he's done it again as Mark Uth drives a low strike past Simon Mignolet just moments after coming on.

An inspired substitution?

Mark Uth (right) watches on as he pulls one back for Hoffenheim
20:14
Hoffenheim chance - Serge Gnabry

26 mins: The visitors have created some chances and should have an away goal back but former Arsenal man Serge Gnabry, who has dyed his hair blond, chips an effort wide with his left foot.

A bad miss.

20:09
Hoffenheim substitution - Havard Nordtveit off, Mark Uth

25 mins: Three-nil down on the night and losing 5-1 on aggregate the visitors are going for it as they take off a defender for an attacker. Will it make a difference though? Their problems seem to be at the back.

20:08
How Liverpool's Twitter account reacted to Emre Can's goal
20:07
GOAL! LIVERPOOL 3-0 Hoffenheim (5-1 agg) - Emre Can (21 mins)

Hoffenheim are being exposed desperately at the back here. Mane is running riot down Liverpool's left and his backheel finds an unmarked Roberto Firmino who floats a cross at the back post for Can to tap in unopposed.

19:57
GOAL! LIVERPOOL 1-0 Hoffenheim (3-1 agg) - Emre Can (10 mins)

Liverpool have been in the ascendancy and their play has warranted a goal... which they've got now. If anyone Can, Emre Can (apologies) and it's the German midfielder who has opened the scoring.

Great work from Mane finds the No 23 with a backheel before the latter sees his shot on the edge of deflect in.

Sportsmail's Craig Hope at St James' Park

That was a nice finish from Aleksandar Mitrovic, who immediately moves to the top of the NUFC scoring charts this season. Get another couple and there is a strong argument for him keeping his place for the visit of West Ham on Saturday.

Sportsmail's Kieran Gill at Whaddon Road

Looks like a 4-3-3 from West Ham to me. Declan Rice as the holding midfielder in the centre.

Cheltenham the classic 4-4-2. A lot of long balls from them so far. Hit it long and hope tactics.

19:53
Sportsmail's Sam Cunningham at St Mary's

Wolves are taking the Carabao Cup so seriously they’ve made 11 changes to their starting line-up — and none of the players who started against Cardiff City in their last match on Saturday are even on the bench.

19:52
Liverpool chance - Sadio Mane

4 mins: Liverpool should be 1-0 ahead on the night. Roberto Firmino plays a glorious through ball to Sadio Mane who is one on one with the Hoffenheim goalkeeper. He could round him but he chooses to poke an effort with the outside of his right foot which is saved.

19:50
Liverpool chance - Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mo Salah

3 mins: Liverpool win a free-kick on the edge of the Hoffenheim penalty area when Alberto Moreno is fouled. Trent Alexander-Arnold, who scored a wonderful free-kick in the first leg, steps up to take it but his efforts his the wall. As the ball spins in the air, Mo Salah is the first to react but heads over.

JONATHAN SPENCER: Barcelona target Philippe Coutinho has been taking his mind off talk regarding his future by enjoying a trip to the barbers.

The Brazilian midfielder was spotted taking a trip to get a fresh haircut on Wednesday in Liverpool.

The 25-year-old, who is currently recovering from a back injury and has missed Jurgen Klopp's side's opening matches of the season, was snapped walking the streets of Liverpool with his entourage.

This comes following news that Barcelona will return with a staggering £138million offer for Coutinho.

The European giants will table the big-money offer, worth £101m up front to Liverpool with an additional £37m in bonuses, on Wednesday. The add-ons are believed to be linked to Champions League appearances.

Earlier in August, Coutinho handed in a transfer request in an attempt to force his way out of the club but Liverpool have so far rejected Barcelona's three bids, with their last worth £114m.
