Tottenham need to spend '£70m or £80m' on a superstar if they are to reach the next level, says Phil Neville

Tottenham need to spend big on a 'superstar' if they are to reach the next level and challenge for the Premier League title, according to Phil Neville.

Mauricio Pochettino's side have four points from three games after a steady start to the new season.

Neville believes that if Pochettino wants to win the title after a third and second place finish in the league then he must be able to sign a high profile name.

'I know they want three or four signings but I think they're missing a superstar,' he told Sky Sports.

'A Gareth Bale. If you could get a Gareth Bale [type player] and put him into that team that would improve the starting XI. It would give them what they lack and that's someone to win a game on his own as an individual.

'Rather than look for three or four players I think they need to go out there and buy and £70m and £80m player to improve the starting XI, to inspire Kane and to keep Alli and them on their toes and they're not going to do that.'

It is a suggestion that former England international Danny Mills agrees with. He also suggested that owner Daniel Levy needed to make a decision on the club's direction.

He said: 'If Daniel Levy goes "top four finish and Champions League is enough, we can sell a couple of good players every year and replace" then are they really ever going to challenge for the title, which is what the coach wants to do and their team probably deserves that opportunity.'

Mills also questioned the depth of Tottenham's squad, particularly because they are also competing in the Champions League.

He added: 'They haven't strengthened their first XI at all at the moment. There are three or four signings in the pipeline.

'But I think Spurs need to do some business to strengthen their first XI.

You've got [Dele] Alli out now for a little bit, what if [Harry] Kane picks up an injury... They need the ability to drop people in that isn't going to weaken their first XI so they can make one or two changes.'
