Tottenham to discover result of Serge Aurier's work visa application as assault conviction complicates £23m move from Paris Saint-Germain

  • Tottenham hope to sign Serge Aurier from Paris Saint-Germain for a fee of £23m
  • A transfer fee and a five-year contract are agreed, he just needs a work visa
  • But a prior assault conviction from 2016 has complicated the application

Tottenham are set to discover today whether their pursuit of Serge Aurier is successful, as they await the result of a work visa application thrown into doubt by the Paris Saint-Germain player's prior assault conviction.

Spurs have agreed a £23million deal with the Parisian club and have an agreement over a five-year contract in place with the player, but still require a work visa before the Ivory Coast international's transfer can be sealed.

That process has been complicated by the 24-year-old's assault conviction, which last season saw him denied entry to the United Kingdom for his club's Champions League match with Arsenal.

He has now been granted a work visa by the Home Office, allowing his move to go through

PSG condemned the decision, describing it as 'incomprehensible' and a 'flagrant lack of respect for the club', but his conviction for assaulting a police officer outside a Paris nightclub in May 2016 is again causing issues.

He was given a a two-month 'convertible' prison sentence, which he is unlikely to ever serve, as well as a £550 fine and a £1,400 damages bill, with the Home Office set to decide on Tuesday whether he will be issued the visa required for him to work in the UK.

If Aurier is successful in his application, he will become just Tottenham's second addition of the summer, following the acquisition of Davinson Sanchez from Ajax.

Spurs have been looking for a new right back following the sale of Kyle Walker to Manchester City.

But Aurier's 2016 assault conviction meant he was not certain to be awarded the visa

Speaking after Sunday's draw with Burnley, manager Mauricio Pochettino was confident of completing a number of deals ahead of Thursday's transfer deadline.

'We can only be positive,' Pochettino said.

'For sure we will add some players who will help us in the future. I am so optimistic. We hope to sign in the positions that we need to strengthen.'
