Birmingham loan move for Chelsea youngster Jake Clarke-Salter was halted by Carl Jenkinson's debut injury

  • Birmingham were hopeful of taking Chelsea starlet Jake Clarke-Salter on loan
  • The Blues had lined up the deal but things changed after Carl Jenkinson's injury
  • On loan from Arsenal, Jenkinson dislocated his shoulder on his debut
  • The injury meant manager Harry Redknapp was forced to line up a right-back

Jake Clarke-Salter's proposed move from Chelsea to Birmingham was wrecked by Carl Jenkinson's shoulder injury.

Centre-half Clarke-Salter had been lined up for a loan spell at St Andrew's until scans confirmed Jenkinson, on loan from Arsenal, had dislocated his shoulder on his debut and would be ruled out for an extended period.

Blues boss Harry Redknapp turned instead to a £3million swoop for Brentford's Maxime Colin as he decided he had to prioritise another right-back.

Clarke-Salter is one of Chelsea's prized teens and in demand from plenty of other Championship clubs but when the Birmingham deal collapsed Antonio Conte opted to keep him as defensive cover within his first-team squad.

Fikayo Tomori, 19, was sent on loan to Hull once the £23million signing of right-back Davide Zappacosta from Torino was secured.

Chelsea have been unable to secure the scale of recruitment demanded by Conte in preparation for a campaign in the Champions League and transfer targets continued to escape right up until the deadline on Thursday.

Nineteen-year-old Clarke-Salter, an England U20 international who was on loan at Bristol Rovers in League One last season, was among the young players to impress the Chelsea manager during the summer tour of China and Singapore.

His position will be reassessed in January.
