No matter who you are - even if you're a professional footballer, the drill is always the same. Birthdays signal the emergence of old, embarrassing photos.
Gather round, open up the cards and presents and wait for the moment a family member has slipped in that awkward snap from your primary school heyday which you'd much rather forget.
For one Liverpool striker, the moment arrived this week when the birthday celebrations were wheeled out to mark year number 28.
Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge marked his 28th birthday with a classic photo throwback
Daniel Sturridge is well known for taking things in good spirit, remaining jovial and poking fun at himself from time to time.
And the England international did exactly that this week after a cheeky childhood photo emerged on his 28th birthday.
The Liverpool man immediately took to social media to share the throwback with the world, remarking comically upon how well his mother used to cut his hair.
Pictured fresh-faced, a young Sturridge could be seen with his tongue out, ready to devour a snack held in his hands.
Despite time having passed along 28-years, the young Sturridge still portrays the same short haircut of the footballer today, complete with shaved in tramlines - pretty much identical to the ones he has this very day.
Captioning the image Sturridge wrote: 'Just clocked this pic too - didn't realize I had the same trim as all those years ago, moms trims were decent back then.'
Again taking to Instagram, Sturridge posted a short video of himself thanking fans for their birthday wishes and kind messages.
The Liverpool ace is currently away on international duty with England, ahead of the Three Lions upcoming World Cup qualifiers with Malta and Slovakia.

Upon his return Sturridge will be hoping to be given a shot in the starting XI at Anfield once more, following his recent goalscoring exploits.
A late substitute appearance was enough for Sturridge to get among the goals during Liverpool's recent demolition of Arsenal, adding the fourth following a pinpoint cross from new signing Mohamed Salah.
