Bastian Schweinsteiger scored the only goal of the match as Chicago Fire beat Montreal Impact to bring an end to a four-game losing streak and rekindle their pursuit of US Open Cup qualification.

The former Manchester United star made the breakthrough on the hour mark, first playing a lovely ball to winger Matt Polster, who beat a defender before crossing into the box for the on-running German to finish.

It was Schweinsteiger's third goal for the MLS outfit since moving from Manchester United in January and kept the Fire safely within the confines of the top six in the Eastern Conference after a spell of poor form.

And his strike was not his only involvement in the game as he was subjected to a horror tackle from Impact defender Deian Boldor, who was shown a red card for serious foul play.

With Schweinsteiger needing medical attention, the referee took the chance to use the Video Assistant Referee system. Having originally shown Boldor a yellow card for the challenge, he sent him off after watching the incident again on a pitch-side television.

'I think for us it was more important that we kept the ball in certain moments of the game,' said Schweinsteiger.

'We tried to be dangerous, we tried to play a little bit different than usual, and it was actually working well. When you lead 1-0 it doesn't matter when you play against 10, it's not easy, so I'm happy that we could win away and make three points.'

The 33-year-old was forced off the field in the 79th minute with tightness in his leg muscle and appeared with an ice pack strapped to his calf after the match.

Schweinsteiger has three goals and two assists to show from his 23 MLS appearances.
