Pep Guardiola revealed Jadon Sancho reneged on a new lucrative contract and claimed the teenager was poorly advised before an £8million move to Borussia Dortmund.

Sancho, who was named player of the tournament at the summer's Under 17 European Championship, was offered £30,000 to remain at Manchester City.

But he turned his back on the club, going on strike and failing to show for training from early July. Sancho had been expected to travel on their pre-season tour of America.

A visibly irritated Guardiola suggested on Friday that Sancho's agent engineered the winger's absence before he eventually left on deadline day.

'We arrived at an agreement with Sancho, we shook our hands. We offered him a huge deal in terms of the salary,' the City boss said.

'Before we went to the States we believed the next step is to train every single day - like with (Phil) Foden and Brahim (Diaz). He decided, or the manager decided, "I am not going to sign the contract".

'We said "OK, you are not going to travel to the States". After that he didn't appear in the training sessions. He should come but he didn't. I said "where are you?" I don't know, he didn't train.

'Even after we shook hands and (they) regretted that and said no, we insisted and met the father and the managers, but if the player says "no no no", what can we do?

'The family - and especially the manager - have to know we had a lot of confidence in him.'

Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Barcelona were all interested in Sancho, who was not fined by City despite his disappearance. He could be back in England next week for a UEFA Youth League fixture against Tottenham, who had asked for Sancho as part of Kyle Walker's switch.

Guardiola added: 'He wanted to play in the first team. I said: "OK you are going to train with us. If you win you are going to play." Duel with Walker, with Benjamin Mendy, with Vincent Kompany - we will see your level.

'I cannot assure them, even the best players we have like Sergio (Aguero) and other ones, that you are going to play. I would be a liar, it's not true.'

Aguero could be paired with Gabriel Jesus against Liverpool on Saturday but City are without captain Kompany, who had been enjoying his longest run in the team for three years.

The central defender suffered his 15th calf injury in five years during a World Cup qualifier against Gibraltar last week but finished the 9-0 win, laying bare City's need for defensive reinforcement last month.

It leaves Guardiola with just John Stones, Nicolas Otamendi and the previously surplus Eliaquim Mangala - who refused a move to West Brom - as options at the back.

'If Mangala had gone I'm pretty sure we would've bought a new one (Jonny Evans),' Guardiola said. 'Because he stayed it made no sense to buy another. To change a team, you don't only need one transfer window. Even with two windows it's not possible. We have no regrets.'
