Jonny Evans is in line for an improved contract at West Bromwich Albion after the club held on to their captain in the face of bids from Manchester City, Arsenal and Leicester City.

Talks are expected to start next month on a new deal worth in excess of £80,000 per week, which would make Evans the highest earner at the Hawthorns.

West Brom were delighted at fending off a serious approach by Pep Guardiola, — sticking to their £30million valuation — and will now look at rewarding a player who has been a consistent performer since joining from Manchester United for £6m in August 2015.

Evans, 29, has two years left on his current terms but Pulis said: ‘I think everybody at the football club would like to see him tied down. It will be interesting to see what Jonny wants to do.

‘It’s all about the three parties, as it always is in a transfer, the buying, the selling and the person in the middle.

‘The bottom line with Jonny is Arsenal were interested and Manchester City were interested. They just never met the value the club wanted. If they had met the value it might have been a different situation.

‘So I am pleased, obviously, Jonny stayed and he has to knuckle down now and get back in the team and start showing everybody what a good player he is again.’

Evans has missed West Brom’s opening three Premier League games with a hamstring injury but is in contention to start against Brighton on Saturday, having scored for Northern Ireland on international duty.

Pulis is not expecting any hangover from the failed pursuits, adding: ‘Jonny’s been at a big club, he wasn’t overawed by the fact big clubs wanted him and it didn’t affect him at all.

‘That experience of being at Manchester United has most probably helped him. He’s been fantastic for this football club and he’s become a better player.’
