Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson suffers no broken bones following clash with Sadio Mane, Pep Guardiola reveals as Liverpool star apologises

  • Ederson was taken off on a stretcher after colliding with Liverpool's Sadio Mane
  • The goalkeeper was being assessed for a facial fracture after the collision
  • He was seen being helped into the stands of the Etihad at the end of the match
  • Mane was given a straight red by referee Jonathan Moss for the high foot

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson had an extraordinary escape from serious injury after being kicked in the face at full speed by Sadio Mane during Manchester City's win.

Mane was sent off after attempting to latch on to a long ball which Ederson headed away, causing the Liverpool player to follow through with a boot to the chin, which caused a deep cut requiring stitches but causing no fracture.

Despite being treated on the pitch for eight minutes and leaving in a neck brace, apparently making use of an oxygen bag, and being rushed to City's on-site medical centre, the Brazilian was back at full time in the dugout, bandaged but seemingly recovered.

And City manager Pep Guardiola absolved Mane of any blame but confirmed that goalkeeper Ederson has not suffered any broken bones following a nasty collision

'Of course it was no intention from Mane because he didn't see him but the impact is hard,' he said. 'I think he followed the ball. But the action is dangerous. I don't know if it's a red card.

'Ederson hasn't broken the bone. Hopefully he can come back as soon as possible. He's OK. It was brave because Mane is coming and you can say, 'I don't touch the ball'.'

Speaking after the match, Guardiola said: 'I spoke to the doctor and nothing is broken, which is important, I don't know if he will look nicer after that but before then he saved a goal. We have a huge goalkeeper.'

Senegal striker Mane was given a straight red card by referee Jonathan Moss before Ederson was removed from the pitch on a stretcher after eight minutes of treatment.

'In this kind of accident Mane didn't see, he was looking at the ball but the impact is huge. After the game against Everton I didn't speak about 10 against 11 and today I am going to speak neither about that,' Guardiola continued.

The Brazilian later tweeted: 'Hi, everyone - I am well. What a fright! It was an important win for us. We are strong. Thanks for all your messages of support.'

That was followed by an apology from the Liverpool forward.

'I hope and wish Ederson a quick recovery,' Mane posted on his official Facebook page.

'I am so sorry he was hurt during our accidental collision on the pitch and am sorry for him that he could not complete the match because of it. I pray he heals fast and is back playing very soon!'

City's No 1, who was replaced by Claudio Bravo, was then taken to the nearby Manchester Institute of Health and Performance to be assessed.

Ederson, who cost £35million this summer, is not thought to have suffered concussion but the club's medical team were checking for fractures.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp defended Mane. 'It was an accident, a very unlucky situation,' he said. 'I think everyone knows Sadio did not even see the goalie. He just wanted to get the ball as soon as possible.

'He's very, very upset. He is shocked about the situation and for sure also about the decision. Of course it would have a big influence.'

Klopp indicated that Liverpool would be unlikely to appeal against the decision. 'It would (probably) be another waste of time like the whole game today, but we will see.'
