Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller has admitted that he contemplated the idea of signing for Manchester United in 2015.

Muller was the subject of a world-record bid from the Red Devils, with then-boss Louis van Gaal keen to reunite with the man who rewarded his faith at Bayern with six goals in eight Bundesliga games during a title-winning breakout season in 2009-10.

Despite thinking about joining Van Gaal at Old Trafford, Muller was convinced to stay loyal to Bayern, with whom he has won six Bundesliga crowns in total, as well as the Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup in 2013.

'There was a stage when the subject arose two years ago when I considered it,' Muller told Kicker.

'But then the club immediately backed me and I was told I belong here.

'I didn't have to think about it a great deal after Bayern said we are counting on you and that you are an important man for us.'

Muller, 27, has now been at Bayern for 17 years, having joined the club as a boy.

But he remains aware that he is replaceable and accepts that he could leave the Allianz Arena before his playing career is over, just like fellow Bayern legend Bastian Schweinsteiger did.

'Of course, it's possible,' he added. 'When my time is up, it's up. Schweinsteiger was here for over 10 years and now he's been gone for over two years and another player is here instead.

'It will be exactly the same with me. If I drop dead tomorrow, there will be a funeral, yet on Friday, 11 players will still be out on the pitch. That's life.'
