Liverpool's appeal to reduce Sadio Mane's three-game suspension following his red card against Manchester City has been dismissed by the FA.

The Senegalese international was given a straight red by referee Jon Moss in the first half against City after he raised his foot into Ederson's face while challenging for the ball, leaving the Brazilian requiring stitches.

The ban means that Mane will miss Premier League games against Burnley and Leicester, as well as the Carabao Cup fixture at the King Power Stadium.

A statement from the FA on Tuesday read: 'Sadio Mane's three-match suspension, which was effective immediately, remains in place after his claim of excessive punishment was rejected following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing.

'The Liverpool forward was dismissed for serious foul play during the game against Manchester City on Saturday [9 September 2017].'

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, City's medical staff spent eight minutes treating Ederson before he left the field in a neck brace and using an oxygen bag.

However, Liverpool launched an appeal to the FA as they believed that a three-game suspension did not reflect the incident on Saturday.

Mane was sent off with the scoreline 1-0 to City but Jurgen Klopp's side went on to lose 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium.

Liverpool will sorely miss Mane, who has got off to a flying start in the league this season, scoring three times in four matches.

However, Klopp will still be able to rely on Mane in Liverpool's Champions League clash with Sevilla on Wednesday night at Anfield.
