Carlos Tevez is 'overweight', claims new Shanghai Shenhua coach... who insists he won't select £650,000-a-week striker until he regains fitness

  • Shanghai Shenhua coach Wu Jingui has called striker Carlos Tevez 'overweight'
  • Tevez is the world's highest-paid player on a £650,000-a-week contract in China
  • Jingui replaced former Sunderland boss Gus Poyet at the helm earlier this week
  • Tevez has scored twice in the Chinese Super League since joining in December

New Shanghai Shenhua boss Wu Jingui has slammed Carlos Tevez for being overweight and insists he won't select the £650,000-a-week striker due to his fitness problems.

Tevez became the world's highest-paid player when he joined Shenhua from Argentine side Boca Juniors in December but has struggled for form in China, scoring just twice in 11 appearances.

And Wu now claims Tevez, who recently returned to action following a calf injury, is not physically ready to play for the Chinese Super League side.

'I won't pick him right now. He's not ready physically. He's not fit to play,' Wu, who replaced Gus Poyet at the helm earlier this week, told reporters via Goal.

'He is overweight, along with [Fredy] Guarin. I have to take responsibility for the team and the players as well.

'If you are unable do your utmost to play, there's no point in picking you. I have coached lots of big stars, and my players are never picked on reputation'.

Tevez was subjected to jeers from Shenhua supporters in his first match back from injury — a 2-1 home loss at the hands of Henan Jianye on Saturday.

Shenhua have struggled in the Chinese Super League so far this season and are languishing in 11th place.

Their squad also includes former Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins and ex-Inter Milan winger Fredy Guarin, who Wu also labelled as overweight.

Former Sunderland and Brighton boss Poyet was dismissed from his post at Shenhua following four consecutive losses in which the club conceded 13 times and scored just once.
