Jamie Redknapp says Crystal Palace will improve once Roy Hodgson makes them 'horrible to watch' after they slump to fifth straight league defeat

  • Crystal Palace lose to Southampton 1-0 in Roy Hodgson first game in charge
  • The loss means Palace are now without a win or a goal in five league games
  • Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp feels the Eagles are having an identity crisis

Jamie Redknapp believes Roy Hodgson's Crystal Palace need to become 'horrible to watch' under his guidance if they are to turn their wretched form around.

Their 1-0 loss against Southampton on Saturday, coming in Hodgson's first game in charge, was their fifth consecutive defeat and meant the Eagles have failed to score a single goal since the start of this season's Premier League.

Sky Sports and Sportsmail pundit Redknapp said the team are having an identity crisis due to the change in approach by Hodgson compared to his predecessor, Frank de Boer.

Speaking after the match, Redknapp urged Hodgson to make some changes as soon as possible

'I think there's a huge identity crisis. I look at them and think ''what sort of team atre you?'' they've got to change quickly under Roy Hodgson,' he said.

'You can see two banks of four, almost quite a horrible side to watch at times. I mean that in a nice way because he gets results playing that way. There is a lack of belief with the ball and without the ball.'

Southampton dominated large periods of the game, with midfielder Lemina setting the tempo for the Saints.

Redknapp continued: 'You have to get after the ball. I watched Lemina today and he was like Iniesta but I can't work out if he is that good or if it was because he had no pressure. Nobody decided to take that responsibility. You can't play football like that.'

Former Palace boss Alan Pardew was sitting next to Redknapp in Sky's studio and was quick to find positives despite an ominous next few matches against the league's elite.

He said: 'Optimism from Ruben Loftus Cheek's performance and also for Zaha to come back.

'For Palace it is a very difficult run. He's played his first team and got a defeat under his belt. They've got a tough run and it is a difficult scenario.

'You have to go back to the training ground and find a formula that is going to work for this team to stay in the division.'

Palace face Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea in their next three league matches so it is hard to see where the first goal will come from.

Redknapp said: 'Recruitment in the summer has left them really short up front. They're overloaded with centre-backs. These are things Roy Hodgson is going to find out.'
