Luke Shaw is in line to make his first appearance for Manchester United this season after joining up with the squad ahead of their Carabao Cup clash with Burton Albion.

United's players, who host Championship outfit Burton at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, gathered at the Lowry Hotel around seven hours before kickoff.

Shaw has not played for the Red Devils first team since suffering ligament damage in his foot April, but has featured in multiple development fixtures this term.

He was then seen carrying his phone, wash bag and a bottle of Lucozade up the steps for a team briefing.

Jose Mourinho is expected to blend youth with experience as his side begin the defence of their Carabao Cup crown.

Twenty-year-old midfielder Scott McTominay could play just his third senior game for the Red Devils.

But Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are likely to provide a stable base at the heart of United's defence.

Jones, 25, and Smalling, 27, were together as they entered the Lowry, where manager Mourinho has lived since taking charge of United last year.

Marouane Fellaini strolled into the building carrying a backpack after receiving heavy praise from his manager recently.

Mourinho said earlier this month: 'I feel weaker without Fellaini in my squad.'

The United boss will be able to call upon Fellaini against Burton, having named him in his matchday squad alongside the likes of Daley Blind, Ander Herrera, Michael Carrick, Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku.

David de Gea, Antonio Valencia, Eric Bailly and Nemanja Matic will all be rested.

Sergio Romero is expected to stand in for De Gea, with 21-year-old Kieran O'Hara the other goalkeeper available to Mourinho.
