Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp insists it is not time to panic after defensive woes: 'I can cool the situation down'

Jurgen Klopp has vowed to stick to his principles after claiming Liverpool are only scrutinised because of the Manchester clubs’ blistering start to the season.

Liverpool’s manager confessed after his side were knocked out of the Carabao Cup that he was ‘sick’ of the goals they had been conceding. In nine games so far, they have only recorded two clean sheets.

His players have also been guilty of squandering chances and it means they find themselves five points off City and United at the top of the Premier League.

Yet Klopp — who has fitness concerns over both his first-choice central defenders Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren, as well as midfielder Emre Can, for Saturday's trip to Leicester — is not worried.

He has not made a point of calling special meetings or doing anything different at Melwood and insists he is oblivious to the pressure building on the club.

‘Each manager in football has another hole to fill,’ said Klopp. ‘But if you were to ask me, what do I prefer? Do I want my team perfect at defending set-pieces, but don’t know how to play football or the other way around? I would still take this one.’

Klopp added: ‘When the Manchester teams are flying, that makes it even more difficult but I cannot change this. What I can do is cool the situation here down.’

There is no escaping that the last fortnight has been below par, with only one point from six in the Premier League, a Carabao Cup defeat and a Champions League draw with Sevilla.

Yet Klopp was incredulous when asked if he need to tell Liverpool fans not to panic. ‘You really think there would be one per cent of a reason I would panic?’ said Klopp. ‘We have eight points. In four games we were the clear better side but we didn’t get the results.

‘Do you think any team in the world loves playing against us in this moment? We have to play football again. Obviously it’s difficult in this place to be No 1 but I cannot think like this. I’m not in panic.’
