Leicester 2-3 Liverpool, Premier League RESULT: Philippe Coutinho hits wonderful goal before Simon Mignolet saves Jamie Vardy penalty

LAURIE WHITEWELL: Liverpool had Simon Mignolet to thank as they edged past Leicester in a five-goal thriller on Saturday to return to winning ways. 

Mohamed Salah scored his sixth goal of the season with a header from an acute angle after a deep cross from Philippe Coutinho found him at the back post.

The Brazilian then opened his account for the new season with a free-kick that nestled into the top corner via a flick from the top of the Leicester wall.

A breathless second half at the King Power Stadium and the players look exhausted as the walk off the pitch.

Leicester's final free-kick didn't threaten the Liverpool goal and the referee blew the whistle before any other phase could form.

Jurgen Klopp is on the pitch and congratulating both sets of players. They've all worked hard tonight, but Liverpool deserved the victory.

Last minute of injury time and Leicester win a free-kick from about 30 yards out. Gray to play the ball in.

90 MINS+4: You'll Never Walk Alone emanates from the away section at the King Power as the fans grow in confidence that three points are heading their way.

90 MINS+2: Leicester have run out of steam here and Liverpool are cruising.

You can't blame them. The middle part of this half was absolutely crazy. Every player on the pitch appeared to be turned up to max power.

89 MINS: Subs, penalties and goals in this second half means Liverpool have a lot more defending before heading home with three points!

86 MINS: There isn't much to be said of the last five minutes.

Liverpool have done well to calm the game down with Sturridge showing plenty of experience by taking his time on the ball.

Slimani is an obviously target man and Leicester are piling the ball forward at every opportunity.

81 MINS: Liverpool build a good attack with realistic numbers this time, obviously showing Leicester a little bit more respect.

Sturridge forces a good save from Schmeichel with a good shot from 25 yards but Leicester clear the resulting corner.

77 MINS: In the aftermath of the first penalty, Emre Can appeared to block a cross with his arm. 

Replays show his hand moved towards the ball and Graham Poll, speaking to BT Sport, said it should have been given.

Few Leicester players appealed but those in the crowd nearby were convinced.

Yet more drama.

Mignolet goes from clown to class act in a matter of seconds as he beats away Vardy's ferocious strike.

The Belgian feigns a dive and reads Vardy's intentions perfectly.

He's got a fantastic record of saving penalties and has now stopped five of the last eight that he's faced.

72 MINS: What drama!

The ball is played in behind to Vardy and Mignolet comes to clear the ball. He should have won the race, but completely misses his kick and ends up ploughing into the Englishman instead.

Leicester have a chance to equalise!

71 MINS: So there were just 90 seconds between the goals from Henderson and Vardy.

70 MINS: It's as you were just seconds later. 

The ball is fed into Gray, who chests the ball down and fires in a fine volley. Migolet can only parry the shot and Vardy is left with a simple header to bring Leicester back within one goal.

68 MINS: Both clubs throw caution to the wind and starting attacking with all hands on deck.

Liverpool looked like they were going to get caught on the counter-attack but Jamie Vardy fails to get his shot away.

Jurgen Klopp's men then break decisively and the ball eventually finds Jordan Henderson in the box as the captain curls in a finish to give them some breathing space.

Sturridge is on 99 career club goals and tonight would be a good night to get to 100.

62 MINS: We all know how tricky Demarai Gray can be to play against and he comes on with fresh legs to face up to two tiring defenders on yellow cards.

Liverpool are looking dangerous in attack but the forecast points to trouble on the horizon. 

Meanwhile, Daneil Sturridge is getting ready.

Riyad Mahrez has been quiet today and goes off to muted applause.

60 MINS: Demarai Gray is stripping down on the Leicester bench

56 MINS: Lovren feels he is being held back by Maguire as he tries to meet a Coutinho corner and goes crazy at Anthony Taylor, who waves away the penalty claim.

Taylor eventually cracks and shows Lovren a yellow card.

That's both of Liverpool's centre-backs in the referee's book now and Kelechi Iheanacho is on the Leicester bench.

53 MINS: More calamitous passing from Liverpool gives Ndidi the ball in the final third and the chance to shoot.

He opts to pass through to Vardy, who is two yards offside.

Chances are there for Leicester.

Well, they're not really there but Liverpool are giving them away. 

47 MINS: Liverpool straight on the attack and Coutinho looks to strike the goal of the season as he hits a falling ball on the volley from the left-hand side of the box.

It's straight into Schmeichel's arms and the goalkeeper collects easily but a sign of intent from Liverpool early in the half

No changes for either side so as we were for the second period.

Jordan Henderson argues with the referee as the players head down the tunnel. He clearly feels there was a foul in the build-up to Okazaki's goal.

46 MINS: Sums up Simon Mignolet perfectly.

The free-kick comes in from Mahrez and Vardy heads it to goal only to see Mignolet save it with an excellent block.

The resulting corner flies in and Mignolet comes to claim the ball. It's a rush of blood to the head and he gets nowhere near it.

The ball bounces off the head of a none-the-wiser Leicester star and Okazaki pokes it into the net.

Leicester have a goal back from nothing... and it's those set pieces again for Liverpool!

45 MINS:  Albrighton pumps the ball long and Matip makes a real error as he brings down Vardy right on the corner of the penalty area.

He was nowhere near the ball at the time. And it gives Leicester one final chance.

45 MINS: Liverpool are toying with the Leicester defence as they go to sleep in the final moments of the first half and barely hold it together.

There's two minutes of stoppage time to play and Liverpool are looking to seal the points.

43 MINS: Leicester are unorganised at the back and Roberto Firmino has acres of space to pick his shot with his weaker left foot.

It's a decent strike, but skids just wide of the Leicester post. Could've and probably should've been 3-0.

40 MINS: Okazaki pulls one back for Leicester but is ruled offside by the linesman.

This looks like it could be talked about for a while. The striker was just about onside when the final ball is played to him but was about five yards offside when Albrighton played in the original free-kick.

However, Harry Maguire, who played the header to Okazaki, was offside.

Confused? Well, we are.

36 MINS: More of a half-chance, to be honest.

Ben Chilwell comes forward from left-back and plays in a very good ball.

Simon Mignolet gets down well to stamp it out.

35 MINS: Liverpool are happy with their work and have stepped down a gear.

Similarly, Leicester have fallen flat after the quickfire double and now seem a little unsure how to move forward.

The result is five minutes of ineffective passing in the middle of the park.

Liverpool will take this all day

30 MINS: Harry Maguire takes a big risk as the last defender and almost loses the ball to the nippy Salah.

Somehow, his diving leg gets a touch on the ball before Salah to spare his blushes. Had that gone wrong, it would've almost certainly been a third for Liverpool.

28 MINS: So it's a difficult situation for Leicester.

Their favourite game plan is out of the window and now they need to come out and attack the game.

Riyad Mahrez takes on the Liverpool defence and Moreno gives away a clumsy foul. It's a good 10-yards further out than Coutinho's and too far to shoot.

The resulting cross is cleared and the attack ends.

23 MINS: What did we say?

Coutinho launches a beautiful curling effort to leave Schmeichel with no chance.

The wall jumped, the goalkeeper dived - there was nothing to be done.

That's why you reject £100m for him.

22 MINS: Alberto Moreno breaks for Liverpool and it looks promising.

Ndidi brings him down and Coutinho has a chance to hit it from 25 yards out. In other words, a great chance for Liverpool.

20 MINS: Since going 1-0 down, Leicester have come out of their shell a little bit. They've had a corner and a decent shot on goal, to no avail.

A spell of pressure eventually breaks down when Ndidi gives away a needless foul.

16 MINS: And the miss is all but forgotten.

The goal is made by Philippe Coutinho, who swings in a wonderful cross to put it on a sixpence for Salah at the far post.

Schmeichel can't get across quick enough and Salah's deft touch back across the goal beats him.

Arguably a much harder finish than the one he just fluffed but that won't concern Liverpool fans.

14 MINS: Liverpool work the ball around the Leicester area well and Emre Can lines up a low shot, which looks destined for the net but hits the post and bounces back.

The ball comes at Salah very quickly and the winger can't react quick enough. His attempt to guide the ball into an empty net goes wide.

It looks like a worse miss than it actually was... he had a fraction of a second to react.

12 MINS: The game has settled into a slower rhythm and is taking a familiar shape.

Liverpool have the lion's share of the ball with Leicester happy to sit back and wait for the chance to break.

Mo Salah becomes the latest player to execute a terrible pass, hitting it straight at a Leicester player.

8 MINS: Liverpool win a corner after Danny Simpson clears a dangerous cross. 

The resulting corner is wasted and collected by Kasper Schmeichel who distributes to Simpson to start a counter-attack. 

It fizzles out after a loose cross but there were gaps at the back for Liverpool and Vardy would have noticed.

6 MINS: Liverpool are cut open with a single pass on the left-hand side.

Jamie Vardy uses his pace to get away from Joel Matip and tries to curl an effort into the far corner. Simon Mignolet saves but the ball is loose in the area and Mahrez is first to it.

But the ball is bouncing awkwardly and Mahrez can't turn it into the net.

A let off for Liverpool. Their defensive line was far too high.

4 MINS: Joe Gomez gives the ball away with a very loose pass and Leicester look set to break with Jamie Vardy getting on his bike in a flash. 

But Riyad Mahrez can't make the chance count and Liverpool clean up the pass.

It's the second time a Liverpool player has given it away carelessly. 

2 MINS: First sight of goal for Liverpool as Emre Can gets behind the defence and fires in a low cross.

Kasper Schmeichel does well to keep hold of the ball and take the fizz out of a dangerous move.

The game gets underway at the King Power Stadium for the second time this week...
