Diego Costa watch: Chelsea's departing striker roars Atletico Madrid to victory over Sevilla from the stands

  • Diego Costa watched Atletico Madrid for the first time since £55million arrival
  • He sat in the directors box on Saturday and his spirit is in the club's new home
  • Costa's arrival has only added to that natural high at the Wanda Metropolitano
  • Atletico impressed as they recorded a routine 2-0 victory over Sevilla in La Liga

Like the stars on Hollywood Boulevard's walk of fame, Atletico Madrid have dotted around 100 plaques on the walkway around their new Metropolitano stadium in honour of their greatest players.

Supporters were congregated around one in particular on Saturday ahead of the team's impressive 2-0 win over Sevilla, that of Diego Costa.

'They are going to have to change that number,' they said, one after the other, as they wandered up to Costa's and its inscription '135 games 2010-2014'.

Costa's shirt is not yet in the club shop but he was in the directors box and his spirit is in the club's new home – a spirit that Atletico coach Diego Simeone compared to ancient Rome after watching the supporters roar the team to victory.

'When the supporters start to make themselves heard it's like a Roman amphitheater, I'm very excited about it,' he said. New arenas can be cold but Atletico are having no such problems in theirs as Chelsea will experience on Wednesday.

Simeone made certain demands about the stadium design. He wanted his technical area to be closer to the south end of the ground where Atletico's nosiest supporters congregate and he was orchestrating them on Saturday even as late into the game as 89 minutes when it was clear the points were theirs.

Atletico toiled to break Sevilla down in the first period but one minute into the second half, when they were now kicking towards that south goal, Yannick Carrasco chased a Luciano Vietto pass and shot past Sergio Rico to make it 1-0.

He was booked for hurdling the advertising hoardings and diving into the jubilant supporters.

Carrasco was involved in the second goal too, crossing for Antoine Griezmann who combined with Felipe Luis to double the lead.

The supporters were in raptures again and the black-suited Simeone was ecstatic bouncing up and down in this technical area while his tag-team partner and number two Mono Burgos berated the fourth official for an earlier incident.

Between the coaching staff, the players and the crowd they have made the Metropolitano and instant cauldron in the style of the old Calderon. Costa's arrival has only added to that natural high.

He was not presented to supporters before the game and Simeone said afterwards the timing of the official closing of his deal was out of his hands suggesting he will not be paraded against Chelsea.

Felipe Luis added after the game: 'He is one of the best three strikers in the world. He's won titles wherever he has gone and I'm very proud that he has come back. He chose Atletico ahead of many clubs this summer.'
