Marouane Fellaini is out of Manchester United’s Champions League clash with CSKA Moscow after suffering an ankle injury in Saturday’s win at Southampton.

United are understood to be furious over a challenge from behind on Fellaini by Saints striker Shane Long at St Mary’s that has ruled the Belgium midfielder out of the Group A tie.

Long was booked for the challenge shortly before half-time but, privately, United feel that it deserved a red card and that Fellaini would have been dealt with more severely if he was the culprit.

Sources close to the player say the injury to his right ankle is 'not bad' but it's unclear how long he will be out for.

Fellaini was not in the travelling party when United flew to Moscow on Monday.

Both teams picked up three points in their opening fixtures, United winning at home to Basle and CSKA beating Benfica in Portugal.

In Fellaini's absence, Mourinho has included Scott McTominay, 20, in his travelling squad.

McTominay was pictured walking next to another player with no prior Champions League experience, 19-year-old defender Axel Tuanzebe, as the United party made their way to their departure gate.

Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial were seen signing autographs.
