Chelsea, who next play Roma twice, lead Group C with two wins from two games.

Asked if the performance was the Blues' best of the season, Hazard told Chelsea TV: 'Yes, in the Champions League also. Since I came here it's the first time we've beaten a really good, really strong team in the Champions League.

'We did well, from the first (whistle) to the end of the game. That means we are a good team, we have good players.'

Hazard was making his second start of the season following his broken ankle - the first was in the Carabao Cup win over Nottingham Forest - and he dazzled at times.

The Belgium playmaker is reportedly in negotiations to extend his Chelsea contract and receive a pay rise to become the highest paid player in the Premier League on £300,000 per week. Hazard's current deal, which expires in 2020, was signed in February 2015.

The 26-year-old joined the Blues soon after their European Cup triumph in May 2012 and they suffered the ignominy of becoming the first holders to exit at the group stage the following season.

Chelsea responded by winning the Europa League and reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2013-14, losing to Atletico after beating Paris St Germain.

PSG ousted Chelsea in the subsequent two seasons and Chelsea did not play in the Champions League in Antonio Conte's first season as head coach, when they won the Premier League.

Hazard praised Batshuayi and Morata for their goals, which came in the first match since Costa's return to Atletico was completed.

Costa watched on from the stands at Estadio Wanda Metropolitano as Morata scored his seventh goal in eight games since his arrival from Real Madrid.

Hazard added: 'That's why they're on the pitch, to try to score goals. And we are here to create something.

'I'm just happy for them, for Alvaro, for Michy. They're top strikers. Both of them deserve to score goals and they did.

'It was good. Not just at the end of the game, for the whole game we did well.

'We should've scored more goals than two. Sometimes it's good to win at the last second.

'We came here to try to win this game and we did. We're happy.'

Conte urged Hazard to take his game to the next level in the Champions League and the Belgian was scintillating at times.

He is now expected to make his first Premier League start of the season, after three substitute appearances, against Manchester City on Saturday.

'Man City are in a good moment,' Hazard said. It's going to be a great game. Two great teams, two great managers. We will see.'
