New kids on the block

Arsene Wenger said the Europa League would act as a chance to give his fringe players and youngsters more game time and he certainly meant it.

Reiss Nelson and Ainsley Maitland-Niles were given a run out in Barysaw but it was 18-year-old Joe Willock who caught the eye when the Gunners' team was announced.

The young midfielder was handed his first senior start having featured just once for the club before, in the Carabao Cup win over Doncaster.

With the side in a comfortable lead, Wenger then handed a debut to Marcus Mcguane, making the 18-year-old, who has graduated all the way from under-6s, the 847th player to represent the club. Fellow youngster Eddie Nketiah then became the 848th.

Milunovic a lucky boy

Willock will have no doubt have expected a far more physical game of football than he is used to but Bate's Nemanja Milunovic took things one step too far.

The youngster was caught in the face by a swinging elbow from the defender as he attempted to close him down during the first half.

The Serb escaped punishment, however, as the referee merely awarded a free-kick. Replays suggested there was intent and a red card would certainly have been justified.

'It’s one of them, it was a really heavy one on Willock,' BT Sport pundit Martin Keown said at the break. 'I have been really impressed with him another we don’t mention but he’s physical and strong but look at the flailing arm that caught him.

'The referee certainly had a great view, I don’t understand why the referee isn’t booking him or even sending him off. He reacted because he knew the severity of it but he didn’t show a card.'

Gordeichuk doesn't hold back

And the midfielder vented his anger when presented with a golden chance to to reduce the deficit in the 67th minute.

Mirko Ivanic's header which was parried into his path by David Ospina and the 27-year-old couldn't resist absolutely blasting the ball into the empty net from a couple of yards out.

Slightly unnecessary, but it did the job.

Reiss Nelson ruining careers
