Barcelona have been linked with a move to the Premier League, should Catalonia secure independence from Spain.

But Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes they should join the back of the queue behind clubs from north of the border.

Catalonia's sports minister Gerard Figueras said Barcelona would be free to join a new league in another country — including England — should the region secede from Spain.

And Wenger joked that winning the title would become even harder to win the title if the La Liga club did join the Premier League. But the Arsenal boss said Scottish clubs would have to come first.

'If Barcelona want to join the Premier League it makes it even more difficult to win the title,' he said.

'But I didn't think they are as far as that. It's interesting because it's a development that will have an influence on the sporting side.

'Barcelona is a highly political club and it's interesting to see how they respond.

'We have enough clubs here. 20 and they want to go up to 24. Before we have to welcome the Scottish clubs before we go to the Spanish ones.'
