Diego Costa put through his paces by fitness coach following Chelsea exit... but is he struggling with the intensity of Atletico Madrid's training regime?

  • Diego Costa cannot play for Atletico Madrid until transfer embargo is lifted
  • Ahead of January bow, former Chelsea man is undergoing brutal training regime
  • Oscar Ortega has been putting Costa through his paces in one-on-one sessions
  • In the summer, striker Costa admitted that the fitness coach's drills 'scared him'

Diego Costa may be glad that he has three months to get up to speed at Atletico Madrid - given the high intensity of their fitness sessions on the training field.

The former Chelsea man has completed his £57million move to Madrid, but due to the club's transfer embargo will not be able to feature until 2018.

That gives him a few months to return to full fitness, and if the club's latest video is anything to go by, Costa may well be glad for the extra time.

The notorious Oscar 'Profe' Ortega - whom Costa knows from his initial time at the club - leaves the striker looking exhausted in their latest drills, taking place away from the rest of Diego Simeone's squad.

Costa has been training with his team-mates, but is also undergoing personal sessions with the fitness coach to up his intensity levels.

In the latest series of drills, Costa is shown working on his close control and agility, stepping up onto a platform before playing a pass back to Ortega.

He is then sent onto a mini trampoline, where the coach pushes him harder still, before the camera shows Costa looking drained of all energy.

The extra training needed by the former Chelsea man is in part due to his lack of pre-season training.

While his Blues team-mates were put through a rigorous regime at Cobham, Costa was back at his home in Brazil, refusing to return.

Even back in the summer, Costa appeared to know what was to come from Ortega, as he responded to journalists' questions on his fitness.

At the airport when he was heading from Sao Paolo to Madrid to complete his move, he was asked if he was scared to step back on the scales after his time off.

'I'm not as bad as some say and here we have El Profe Ortega who is going to have me in shape. The scales don't scare me, his training sessions scare me!'

And he seems to have been right.
