Belgium put unbeaten World Cup qualifying record on line in Bosnia as Roberto Martinez calls for focus

  • Belgium manager Roberto Martinez is focused on beating Bosnia in Sarajevo
  • Red Devils have confirmed Romelu Lukaku will not be risked due to ankle injury
  • Martinez is keen for striker's replacement to take his opportunity in Sarajevo
  • Bosnia are battling it out with third-placed Greece for a play-off spot in Group G

Belgium have confirmed they will not risk playing Romelu Lukaku in their penultimate World Cup qualifying game, but the rest of the squad were put through their paces ahead of the Bosnia clash.

The Red Devils - on 22 points - have qualified from Group H and can begin to start preparations for next summer's tournament in Russia.

Bosnia can make sure of second place if they beat Belgium at home on Saturday and Greece lose away to Cyprus - and manager Roberto Martinez does not expect the intensity levels of his players to drop despite qualification being assured.

With Manchester United striker Lukaku sidelined with an ankle injury, Martinez told reporters on Friday: 'We have three options to replace him: Dries Mertens, Divock Origi and Michy Batshuayi.

'I am waiting for the last training to make a decision. I have to take into account the other conditions here in Sarajevo.'

Martinez will be reunited with Everton midfielder Muhamed Besic having signed him during his ultimately disappointing three-season stay at Goodison Park.

With third-placed Greece still to face Cyprus and Gibraltar, the hosts know they must avoid defeat at all costs, and Martinez hopes his side can pounce on any nerves in their opponents.

'Our position can be both a pro and a disadvantage. I can not deny that we are getting relaxed in a sense because we are sure of our ticket for the World Cup.

'But we will have to provide enough intensity if we want to win, because Bosnia have more experience - especially at home.

'Don't forget that this generation was also in the World Cup in Brazil. Thanks to my relationship with Besic I know this opponent well. We will have to play at high level.'

There is a chance that Lukaku - who has remained in his native country to receive treatment - will be fit enough to participate in Belgium's final qualifier against Cyprus on Tuesday.

The Cypriots can only continue to dream of a first World Cup appearance if they beat Greece and Bosnia drop points, or they draw with Greece and Bosnia lose.
