The 26-year-old is a free agent and had been training with Sheffield United, Charlton Athletic and Port Vale.
Oldham interim manager Richie Wellens, who has won his first three games in charge, has invited Stewart to train with the League One club and he is discussing a contract until the end of the season.

Oldham confirmed earlier this week that players and staff had yet to be paid for September while talks are ongoing with prospective new investors.
Stewart came through the youth system at Old Trafford but failed to make a first team appearance and joined Hull in 2011 following a loan spell.
He was shipped out on loan four times from Hull before joining Ipswich where he managed just two senior appearances before his release.
