Liverpool will be without Sadio Mane until December after it emerged last night that the Senegal forward has a grade two tear of his left hamstring.
It is another huge blow to Jurgen Klopp as he prepares his faltering team for a crunch clash with Manchester United on Saturday.
Mane will also miss three Champions League games — two against Maribor and one against Sevilla — plus another six in the Premier League, including matches against Tottenham and Chelsea. Liverpool won just once in seven matches when Mane — scorer of three goals this season — was at the Africa Cup of Nations last January.
Sadio Mane has injured his hamstring with Senegal and is out for six weeks
Mane is an integral part of how Liverpool play under manager Jurgen Klopp
The 25-year-old, who suffered the injury against the Cape Verde Islands, joins Adam Lallana (thigh) and Nathaniel Clyne (back) on the sidelines. Now Klopp must hope Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino return unscathed from Brazil duty.
Mane was substituted in the 87th minute of Senegal's World Cup qualifier on Saturday. It was a game his country needed to win — which they did, 2-0 — to stand any chance of reaching Russia next summer.
It has subsequently transpired that injury will prevent him from playing until the first week of December at the earliest.
Mane has already missed three games this season for a red card against Manchester City
Liverpool released a statement on Tuesday which read: 'Sadio Mane is facing a spell on the sidelines after sustaining a hamstring injury on international duty.'
The forward's season has already been disrupted by a three-match suspension for a controversial red card against Manchester City in September.
Mane's absence could help Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain kick-start his Liverpool career
