Manchester City are set for talks with the Football Association about standards in top-flight womenā€™s football after a worrying response to a serious injury.

Pauline Bremer, 21, suffered a horrific leg fracture in the first half of Saturday's 3-2 win away at Everton but no emergency services were present during the Womenā€™s Super League clash, which was played on a plastic pitch in Widnes.

Sportsmail understands an ambulance failed to arrive on site for an hour after the Germany international collided with Evertonā€™s Gabrielle George.

Bremer screamed in pain on the ground after the challenge, with players around her visibly distressed during an eight-minute stoppage.

One of Bremerā€™s team-mates vomited pitchside after seeing the injury, and eight people - including captain Steph Houghton and defender Megan Campbell - had to carry Bremer off on a stretcher.

Members of both City and Evertonā€™s medical teams were on hand but no emergency services were present.

City are hugely disappointed by the lack of an ambulance crew and have contacted the FA.

Full discussions will take place once the governing body, which runs the Womenā€™s Super League, has officially consulted with both clubs.

There is currently no stipulation that emergency services must be booked by womenā€™s home teams.

Ambulances must be present for both fans and players throughout the menā€™s professional game.

The Ā£500,000 artificial surface at Widnes, also used by Liverpool and the townā€™s rugby league team, has contributed to a number of injuries since it was installed five years ago.

But Everton manager Andy Spence refuted suggestions that was to blame. ā€˜The pitch played no role in this injury,ā€™ he said. ā€˜This was purely a contact injury as a result of two players challenging. The surface is totally irrelevant in relation to this injury.ā€™

The FA declined to comment when contacted by Sportsmail.Ā
