Chelsea Ladies had a major fright before edging out Bayern Munich on away goals to reach the Champions League last 16.

A 2-1 defeat on the night for the Women's Super League side in Germany saw the tie finish 2-2 on aggregate, with Chelsea hanging on desperately in the closing moments.

England international Fran Kirby fired Chelsea ahead on the hour with a fine finish into the top left corner after being played through by Ramona Bachmann.

That gave the Blues a 2-0 aggregate lead after their narrow home win and the tie looked unlikely to throw up late drama, but Kirby's strike was to prove priceless for the visitors.

Kirby was substituted moments later due to injury, and Chelsea were pegged back to 1-1 when a corner from the right was nudged towards her own goal by Blues defender Millie Bright, and Gemma Davison on the line could not kick clear.

Bayern substitute Lucie Vonkova put the German side ahead on the night in the 83rd minute, levelling the tie.

However they could not legitimately find a way past Chelsea keeper Hedvig Lindahl for a third time, with a stoppage-time strike ruled out for pushing in the penalty area.
