Everton fans will hope that by clearing his mind, the former Southampton midfielder returns with renewed energy after the the club slumped to 16th in the Premier League following defeat by Burnley before the break.

The Toffees have played Schneiderlin alongside Idrissa Gueye as part of a defensive axis in midfield, but only Crystal Palace and West Ham have conceded more than their 12 goals so far this term.

Ronald Koeman is facing a vital month with a home game with Arsenal sandwiched between visits to Brighton and Leicester City and games against Lyon and Chelsea in the Europa League and Carabao Cup respectively.

The Dutchman will hope to arrest the slide with victory over the newly promoted Seagulls at the Amex Stadium on Sunday, with both teams locked on seven points after seven games.

Everton legend Peter Reid claimed this week that his former side currently lack the necessary battling qualities, which Schneiderlin showed during the second-half of last season.

'This Everton team is in a scrap,' he said. 'The team I was in could scrap. I am not sure this team can. Has this team got the character? Has this team got enough to scrap? Forget about all the nice stuff at the moment, it is a scrap.

'There is a lack of confidence and it is showing on the park because if we are not careful we are in a dogfight and I am not sure, looking at them at the moment, that they are ready for that.'
