Stoke boss Mark Hughes will 'have a conversation' with Saido Berahino before he is allowed to take another penalty after Southampton miss

  • Saido Berahino has not managed to find the back of the net in 32 matches
  • He had the chance at Southampton after Xherdan Shaqiri won a penalty
  • Shaqiri gave Berahino the chance but the striker missed from the spot
  • Now manager Mark Hughes has admitted Berahino might be off penalty duties

Saido Berahino must ask for permission to take another penalty at Stoke after missing from the spot against Southampton to extend his barren run to 32 games.

Mark Hughes said Xherdan Shaqiri granted Berahino the chance to score having been fouled in the box but the 24-year-old would have to consult with the dugout before stepping up again.

Fraser Forster saved Berahino's penalty meaning a late Peter Crouch goal was required to earn to the three points and Hughes does not want to take any chances in future.

Berahino has failed to convert his last four penalties in a sequence without scoring that stretches back 20 months to February 2016, when he found the net against Crystal Palace. Last season was goalless for Berahino and he is yet to get off the mark in this campaign.

The spot-kick against Southampton was seen as a way of breaking that duck, but Hughes does not think Berahino will be granted another chance from 12 yards any time soon.

'I don't think Shaq will allow him to have it again to be honest,' said Hughes.

'Saido had earned the penalty and he felt in a good place, and he wanted the opportunity to take it. I think Shaq acknowledged that and allowed him. It is a shame he didn't score but it is water under the bridge now, he has got to get on with it.

'We have to look at his record. In recent times he hasn't converted too many of them. So we'd probably have a conversation about him taking another one. I'd expect him to look over to the bench to see if he could take it!

'Some people don't like to take penalties but Saido enjoys that responsibility. He will always want to take penalties. We just have to make the decision on whether he is the right one to take them.' Hughes though does believe it is only a matter of time before Berahino, who scored 20 goals in the 2014-15 campaign, begins to find the net for Stoke.

'His attitude to work and demeanour around the place is good. We are just all desperate for him to get off the ground running. He is doing everything in his power. He is training well and he does work after training to hone his skills.

'We are scratching our heads a little bit to understand why he hasn't score up to this point, because he has done everything he needs to do. When a player does that, then it is only a matter of time. It is taking a bit longer than we thought it would.'

Hughes accepted that Berahino, a £15million signing from West Bromwich Albion, may be the type of striker who scores in bursts.

'I was a little bit like that,' he said. 'I was never a 20, 25 goal a year player. But I'd get 10 or 15 every year, and they would come in spurts. Four or five in five or six games, then I'd go seven or eight games without scoring, then I'd score a few more in a run. He could very well be like that as well.

'It is about chances as well. I can't really remember too many chances where he hasn't made best use of them. It is about us creating more and Saido creating for himself.'
