Southampton and Newcastle played out an entertaining 2-2 draw on Sunday afternoon, with Manolo Gabbiadini scoring twice to ensure the Saints came away with a point.
Isaac Hayden put the visitors ahead in the 20th minute thanks to a powerful right-footed strike from just outside the Southampton penalty area.
Italian striker Gabbiadini then equalised for Southampton on 50 minutes thanks to a brilliant solo effort. However, just 86 seconds later, Newcastle went up the other end and went ahead once again as Ayoze Perez netted past Fraser Forster.
But there was another twist to come. Gabbiadini equalised yet again from the penalty spot after Shane Long was brought down by Florian Lejeune with 15 minutes remaining.
Late corner for Newcastle. This really is the last chance...
It's cleared by Van Dijk and the whistle goes. What an entertaining contest. Honours even.
And that is just about a fair reflection as the game ebbed and flowed, swinging from one team to the other.
Newcastle took the lead after 20 minutes through Isaac Hayden's strike from outside the box, but the Saints levelled through Manolo Gabbiadini four minutes after the break.
They were on terms for a mere 86 seconds, however, as Ayoze Perez fired in to restore Newcastle's lead. But a Gabbiadini penalty, blasted home after Florian Lejeune fouled Shane Long, meant the points were shared.
Newcastle still pushing close to the end. Shelvey is almost played clear and then Forster comes out to collect the ball. There are mere seconds remaining now.
But that could be much longer as two Newcastle players - Hayden and Ritchie - clash heads while attempting to clear the ball. They are fine to continue after a short delay.
Scrapping by Jonjo Shelvey wins Newcastle a corner. They've just looked a little bit tired in the last 10 minutes. But can they strike here?
Ritchie's corner is a good one, it's headed towards the corner by Lejeune and Davis was there on the post to clear it off the line. Agonisingly close.
Lejeune so close to atoning for giving away that penalty.
Southampton on top at the moment and pushing for a winner. Ryan Bertrand forward down the left, playing a one two with Boufal to get in behind. His cross is punched away on the dive by Elliot.
Final changes for both teams. Shane Long off and Charlie Austin on for the hosts. Jacob Murphy replaces Christian Atsu for Newcastle.
Another good opportunity here for Newcastle as Dwight Gayle is fouled just outside the box. Fraser Forster lines up a two-man wall.
Matt Ritchie touches to Jonjo Shelvey then shoots but there's too much bend and it flies wide.
Tempers flaring a little bit and Isaac Hayden will be cautioned for a rash tackle on Lemina in the middle of the field.
A couple of minutes after scoring and now Gabbiadini goes into the book.
Gabbiadini steps up under plenty of pressure and fires the ball high into the net past Elliot. Southampton back on terms for a second time!
Shane Long breaks down the left and goes down in the box following a very clumsy challenge by Florian Lejeune. Penalty given right away by Kevin Friend.
Newcastle bracing themselves for a late Southampton push but though the hosts are seeing plenty of the ball, there doesn't appear to be a way through for now.
And now a second change for Newcastle as Joselu is replaced by Dwight Gayle. 22 minutes left in the game.
A purposeful forward run by Manquillo out of the Newcastle defence. He is eventually snuffed out and from the next attack, Atsu fires high and wide.
Meanwhile a change for the Saints as Steven Davis replaces Oriol Romeu in midfield.
Rafa Benitez making his first change of the afternoon. It's the scorer, Ayoze Perez, replaced by Mikel Merino.
The home fans go up thinking they have a penalty after Gabbiadini goes down in the box. But the referee's whistle is actually to penalise the striker for being too physical. Free-kick to Newcastle.
Time for a change and a little breather, which is appreciated.
Nathan Redmond goes off and Sofiane Boufal comes on. Anything to do with that bad Yedlin challenge, I wonder?
Yedlin in big trouble here after lunging in on Redmond close to the touchline. He is already on a booking but gets away with it. The referee Kevin Friend decides a final warning is sufficient.
Well the joy was short-lived! Barely a minute after conceding, Newcastle are back in front!
Ayoze Perez has been excellent this afternoon and he burst down the right and took aim. His angled shot was pushed out by Fraser Forster but only back to him.
The angle for the rebound was even tighter, but as Forster failed to cover his near post, Perez was able to drill the ball home. Newcastle back into the lead.
Perez off and running for the season in the Premier League and the away fans are in full voice once again.
There were only 86 seconds between the two games.
Moments after almost conceding a second through Joselu, Southampton have hauled themselves level and the goal was all about Manolo Gabbiadini.
He burst into the penalty box but couldn't work the angle to shoot right-footed because of close marking. But he cut back from the byline, almost to the edge of the box before finally getting half a yard.
His low shot picked out the bottom corner and St Mary's erupts. That's his second of the season.
Almost a second for Newcastle within 90 minutes of the restart. Great work by Perez to weave around Van Dijk and cross from the right. Joselu stuck out a boot and his shot looped up against the crossbar. Desperately unlucky.
A Shelvey follow up was kept out by Forster. Newcastle mean business.
Newcastle out on the field early, the Saints keeping them waiting by loitering inside the tunnel. Newcastle get us started again, leading 1-0 here. No alterations for either side.
The first half comes to a close and it's not been too bad a contest.
Newcastle lead thanks to Isaac Hayden's strike from outside the box but Southampton have enjoyed their moments.
The game in the balance at half-time.
Matt Ritchie attempts a speculative overhead kick inside the Saints area and it loops up towards the back post. Atsu chased it but can't keep his effort down under pressure.
DeAndre Yedlin became the first player into the book for conceding a free-kick a couple of minutes ago.
The home side ending the first half strongly as a quickly-taken free-kick catches Newcastle cold. The ball is played in low to Tadic, whose shot is blocked for a corner.
Elliott comes out to claim the kick and just about manages to get enough onto it.
Jamaal Lascelles puts his arm around Shane Long's neck and drags him down for a foul, offering Southampton the chance to deliver a dangerous free-kick.
Van Dijk and the other big men go forward. Ryan Bertrand floats it in and Van Dijk rises to win his header but Newcastle clear.
The home side come again and Shane Long tries an effort from the edge of the box. Hayden, who is dropping back into defence effectively whenever Southampton come forward, gets across to block.
Southampton working the ball around trying to break through the Newcastle ranks but the visitors looking well organised so far, closing down the space and clearing the crosses that come in.
Southampton chasing a leveller and Gabbiadini comes close to a contact inside the box from Yoshida's whipped cross. Just above the Italian's head and cleared by Manquillo behind him.
Perez for a split second thinks he's in on the right-hand side, but he is pulled up for a foul on Maya Yoshida. He was clean through had the referee not penalised him. Seemed like the faintest of contacts on Yoshida, if there was any at all.
Newcastle almost throw it away within seconds of gaining the lead. A Southampton corner, Rob Elliott thinks he can come and collect, but he is beaten in the air by Virgil van Dijk, whose header drops wide of the far post.
There's the breakthrough and it's Newcastle who have it.
Ayoze Perez had switched flanks to the left and he was able to work enough space to cross in low. Christian Atsu struck it on the half-volley but the effort was blocked.
It then rebounded to Hayden outside the box and his strike was low and clean, ripping into the net with Fraser Forester's view blocked by the two defenders in front of him.
At the other end a moment of alarm for Southampton as Ayoze Perez charges in to close down Fraser Forster as he prepares to make a clearance. The ball strikes the Newcastle man but goes harmlessly wide, to Forster's immense relief.
That was a far better chance for Tadic, just a couple of minutes after the first. Redmond again with joy down the left, cutting back onto his right foot and crossing deep to the back post.
Tadic was there, loosely marked, but he sends his header just over the bar.
A first attempt at goal for the Saints. Cedric forward down the left and tucks a pass inside to Dusan Tadic. He sizes up his chances from 25 yards but didn't strike the ball well and it sails over.
Oriol Romeu doesn't hold back when challenging Jonjo Shelvey in what is likely to be many clashes between the central midfielders.
A free-kick but the referee doesn't see the need for a card.
Newcastle manage to string a few passes together and they win a corner after Ayoze Perez was played clear down the right. Shelvey swings across the corner and it's only cleared to the edge of the area.
Christian Atsu is alert and quickly onto the ball, striking a powerful shot into the side-netting. It certainly had Fraser Forster concerned but the wrong side of the woodwork.
The 3,000 or so travelling fans from Newcastle - and what an epic journey that is for a Sunday - making themselves heard in the corner of St Mary's.
Their team haven't made much impression so far, however.
Early pressure from Southampton who have bossed the ball almost from kick-off and not allowed Newcastle a look-in.
Nathan Redmond gets it wide left and tries to pick out Manolo Gabbiadini in the centre. It's cleared in the nick of time by Manquillo.
The teams emerge into a bright afternoon on the south coast. Southampton in their familiar red and white stripes, albeit underneath some black tracksuit tops ahead of kick-off.
Newcastle in their change colours this afternoon of light blue shirts.
The crowd filtering in through the St Mary's turnstiles and making their way to their seats. Each of the home seats has been adorned with one of those cardboard clacker things in order to boost the atmosphere a little.
The players just going through their last-minute routine in the dressing rooms before assembling in the tunnel.
The Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson is in attendance this afternoon.

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino admits seeing Rafael Benitez mastermind Liverpool's miracle in Istanbul gave him the taste for a career in the dugout.

Wayne Rooney rescued a point for Everton after converting a late penalty, just minutes after Anthony Knockaert had put Brighton ahead.
Both sides lacked quality in a dour first-half with neither side looking much of a threat going forward. The home-side perhaps came closest to breaking the deadlock but Lewis Dunk's shot was blocked by Michael Keane.
The second-half also offered very little in terms of entertaining football until a late flourish saw Rooney score a penalty after Bruno appeared to elbow Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
