It comes in contrast to their form in the Champions League. They lost their first game 2-1 against CSKA Moscow before being thrashed 5-0 by Basel on a trip to Switzerland.

They have also been in questionable form in the Portuguese Liga and are third, behind rivals Sporting Lisbon and Porto.

That does not mean that United players are taking them lightly ahead of Wednesday's game.

Juan Mata heaped praise on the Portuguese giants: 'Benfica brings me good memories. I played with them in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and, one year later, in the Europa League Final, at the Amsterdam Arena.

'It's a team with many good players and a crowd which supports a lot.

'Benfica needs points. We have to give our best in order to achieve a positive result'.

Benfica will welcome back one of their former players when Nemanja Matic arrives with United. He played for the club between 2011 and 2014.
