Manchester City concede from a penalty in the Champions League... after their goalkeepers save the previous six in a remarkable run

When Amadou Diawara tucked away his penalty for Napoli past Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson, it ended one of the most extraordinary runs in Champions League football. 

Prior to this, each of the previous six penalties awarded against City in the competition had been saved - a run stretching back over two and a half years. 

What is more, it carried on over three different goalkeepers, with Joe Hart starting the trend, continued by Willy Caballero, with Ederson adding the final save to the list.

It was the first time this had been done in seven attempts, including Dries Mertens' earlier miss

The run stretched back to February 2015, when Joe Hart saved from Lionel Messi's penalty

Diawara broke the run in their Champions League group stage clash, but it was not enough for Napoli to avoid a 2-1 defeat at the Etihad.

The list of players who had their efforts saved contains some great names of modern football, including Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Neymar, and started with one of the best of all time, Lionel Messi.

In the final minute of their round of 16 clash first leg on 24 February 2015, Messi had the chance to add to Barca's advantage - as they led 2-1 at the Etihad, it would be a tie killer.

However Messi tamely put his shot to Hart's left, the English stopper pushed it out, and the Argentina international then contrived to head the rebound wide.

Hart was on form again the following season, when he saved from Raffael of Borussia Monchengladbach in City's 2-1 group stage win in Germany.

City would go to the semi finals in 2015-16, in large part to their quarter final first leg 2-2 draw away to PSG - City won the return 1-0 to progress - which included yet another save.

Ibrahimovic was denied by Hart in Paris, the last of the England No 1's three saves in this run before the baton was handed to Willy Caballero.

Caballero also saved from Falcao when Man City beat Monaco 5-3 in the round of 16

Caballero made two Champions League saves in the 2016-17 season, as he took over the gloves following Hart's exile under Pep Guardiola.

The veteran saved from the spot against Neymar - although Barcelona went on to win that game 4-0 - and from Falcao in the topsy-turvy 5-3 round of 16 first leg win against Monaco.

Ederson then added his name to the extraordinary run by saving from Dries Mertens in the first half of the win over Napoli - but when Diawara took over, the run was finished.
