  • But he seemed in high spirits during his time with the fan favourite Spurs striker

Harry Kane may be on top form but he still has some distance to go before he matches up to the man he welcomed to Hotspur Way on Friday.

Jimmy Greaves was a guest of honour at the training ground as Spurs prepare to take on Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.

And it was Tottenham skipper Kane who showed him around, clearly enjoying the chance to meet one of his club's most legendary players.

Kane told TottenhamHotspur.com: 'It was an honour to meet Jimmy.

'His achievements at Spurs and his goal record for club and country are certainly things that I aspire to.

'It's important that we continue to recognise the many great players in our history who have laid the foundations for what we're trying to achieve today.'

Greaves, who was part of England's World Cup winning squad in 1966, suffered a life-threatening stroke in May 2016 and has been confined to a wheelchair ever since.

But he was animated as he spent time with Kane, who showed him a photograph of himself that hangs in a room at the training ground.

Christian Eriksen also popped in to spend some time with Greaves at the training ground in Enfield.

This is not the first time the club have invited the iconic striker along since he suffered the stroke. He was invited back to White Hart Lane before it was torn down at the end of last season.

Greaves joined Spurs in 1961 in a £99,999 transfer from AC Milan and went onto become their top goalscorer - with 266 - a record he still holds to this day.

The 77-year-old has rarely been involved with his former clubs, especially as he has openly admitted he prefers watching games on television to travelling to stadiums.

Greaves opened up about his illness last year. 'I remain in a wheelchair and it's now likely I will stay this way for the rest of my life,' he said.

'The doctors have told me I won't walk again and that I will always need ongoing care.

'It was devastating to hear them say that but I will never stop trying to get better - and the main thing is that I'm still here fighting all the way.

'I'm not feeling sorry for myself, I'm just taking each day as it comes and trying to make small improvements all the time.'

Greaves also represented Chelsea and West Ham during a distinguished playing career.
