Sergio Aguero will be given the chance to become Manchester City’s all-time record goalscorer against Wolves in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night.

Aguero netted for the 177th time in his City career in Saturday’s 3-0 win against Burnley to equal the club record set by 1930s star Eric Brook.

The Argentine, playing for the first time in three weeks after damaging ribs in a car accident in Amsterdam, was taken off near the end before he was able to claim the record on his own.

However Guardiola has promised to help the 29-year-old break the record as soon as possible and will name him in the squad for the Carabao Cup tie this week, even though the competition is usually reserved for the second string.

‘Sergio has not played for three weeks and it takes time to get that little bit of rhythm back. He needs to play minutes, he did it today and maybe on Tuesday again,’ said Guardiola.

‘It was so important today he equalled the record. When he breaks it, it’ll be something special in the history of the club. We will be happy at that moment to share it with him.’

Aguero, who famously scored City’s title winner against QPR in 2012, equalled the record in less glamorous circumstances.

With the game at 0-0, Burnley were fuming that referee Roger East pointed to the spot after Bernardo Silva had fallen theatrically following a challenge by Clarets goalkeeper Nick Pope.

Aguero kept his cool to send his spot-kick into the bottom right-hand corner and there was relief too – he had missed seven of his previous 21 penalties, including one against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League last month.
