'If I kicked my kid he wouldn't fall like that!' Sean Dyche left fuming with Bernardo Silva after Manchester City star's controversial tumble to win penalty during victory over Burnley

  • The Portuguese international went down after light contact from Nick Pope
  • Incident during Premier League clash happened while game was goalless
  • Sergio Aguero eventually scored spot-kick in 3-0 victory for table toppers

Burnley manager Sean Dyche claimed the honour has gone out of football after watching Manchester City's Bernardo Silva fall dramatically to win a crucial penalty against his side at The Etihad Stadium.

Dyche was fuming when Silva somersaulted in the air after being challenged by goalkeeper Nick Pope following minimal contact. Referee Roger East pointed to the spot and Sergio Aguero scored to give City a 30th-minute lead on their way to a 3-0 win.

Though the Burnley manager accepted there had been some contact, he still regarded it as excessive gamesmanship from City's Portuguese international.

'For him to get that high off the floor when your hands are above your head is a skill in itself. If I kicked my kid in the garden he wouldn’t fall like that,' fumed Dyche.

'There has to be a bit of what I’d call honour in the game. That’s out of the window because it’s not there. There’s contact but you can’t fall as a 13 stone professional footballer. How can you fall when someone touches you that softly? But I seem to be the only one who wants to change it.'

The FA have recently introduced retrospective action for diving and handed a two-match ban for Carlisle's Shaun Miller last week.

But when there is any contact at all, the authorities are reluctant to call players out for cheating and recently cleared Richarlison of Watford for his theatrical fall against Arsenal.

Dyche feels the spirit of the game is being eroded by players conning officials which goes against the notion that football is a contact sport and that not every contact should lead to a foul or penalty.

'The contact was so minimal today, I don't know the referee would see it,' he said.

Guardiola disputed the Burnley manager's version and said: 'I have seen it and it was a penalty.'

Burnley were holding City at 0-0 when Pope saved from Kevin De Bruyne and then came out to dived at the feet of Silva, who was facing away from goal.

Silva's foot was left under Pope's body for a split-second before he leapt off the ground but it looked as if he might have initiated the movement so he would be caught.
