Joel Matip has admitted that Liverpool must make significant improvements defensively if they are to mount a top-four challenge this season.
The Reds backline was breached four times at Wembley on Sunday as Tottenham ran riot, leaving Liverpool in ninth place in the Premier League.
Only five other sides have conceded more than the 16 goals let in by Jurgen Klopp's team this term and Matip is not shirking responsibility for his club's modest position.
Liverpool were comfortably beaten by Tottenham at Wembley on Sunday afternoon
'It cannot go like this. It cannot be that we concede that many goals away. I'm a defender and I should take care of this,' he told Sky Sports.
'We gave them the opportunity. It was not that they played the perfect ball with our mistakes.
'We have to take care of them and have to stop them.'
Joel Matip has admitted he and his team-mates cannot allow their defensive form to continue
Liverpool face Huddersfield next weekend and Matip has vowed to ensure they make instant amends.
'They were the better team. We only came back for a short time [in the game] and that is not enough to win against Tottenham,' he said.
'We'll try to strike back next week.'
