Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho hails Ander Herrera honesty after Huddersfield loss: 'It is not easy for players to recognise why they lost'

  • Manchester United fell to a shock 2-1 defeat against Huddersfield last weekend
  • Ander Herrera questioned his team-mates' attitude after the encounter
  • And Jose Mourinho has praised him for being honest about the team's display
  • United will aim to get back on track when they host Tottenham on Saturday

Jose Mourinho has hailed Ander Herrera's honest comments following last weekend's loss to Huddersfield Town.

Manchester United fell to a shock 2-1 defeat against Premier League new boys Huddersfield, and the Spanish midfielder questioned his team-mates' displays after the game.

Mourinho himself seemed to react angrily to those comments during his own post-match interviews.

But, ending any suggestion of a rift between the two, the Portuguese manager praised Herrera ahead of Saturday's game against Tottenham.

'I was surprised but I was happy about his words because it is not easy for the players to recognise and admit [why they lost],' said Mourinho, according to Goal.com.

'I was happy because it shows dignity, character and intelligence to know the reason why we lost the match.

'So contrary to some imaginary sources that tell you everything we do here, I can promise you that since that match I didn't speak one single second about the match, because [there's] no need.'

United's loss to Huddersfield leaves them five points behind local rivals Manchester City, who top the Premier League table.

They are level on points with Saturday's opponents Spurs, who have won four in a row in the league.

Mourinho has won all five of his home matches against teams managed by Mauricio Pochettino.
