Manchester United legend Gary Neville believes there's 'something wrong' with Anthony Martial and the Frenchman plays at '85 per cent'

  • Anthony Martial scored Manchester United's winner against Tottenham
  • It was the 21-year-old French striker's sixth goal of the season so far
  • Old Trafford legend Gary Neville has been critical of Martial however
  • Neville says he only plays at '85 per cent' and there is 'something wrong'

Gary Neville believes there is 'something wrong' with Anthony Martial and believes the French striker only plays at '85 per cent'.

Martial scored the winner for Manchester United against Tottenham on Saturday, keeping them in touch with rivals Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

But Old Trafford legend Neville says he expected more from Martial, who has found himself beneath Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford in the United pecking order this season.

The former United defender told The Gary Neville Podcast on Sky Sports: 'It's been a stop-start Manchester United career for Martial.

'For someone of that talent, he should be tearing this league apart with his ability. He's lost his place in the France squad. There's obviously something wrong with him.

'Mourinho and the French manager [Didier Deschamps] have turned off of him a little bit. You always get the feeling he's playing at 85 per cent.

'If he showed that extra 15 per cent, then he could do anything. He's got everything you'd want: composure in front of goal, great skill, pace, strength, but what is that little bit missing?'

Martial has scored six goals and supplied five assists for United in all competitions this season and actually has a better minutes-per-goal ratio (100) than Rashford (121) and Lukaku (117).

But he has played almost half the minutes of the Belgian top scorer (601 to 1170) and considerably less than Rashford, becoming used to a super-sub role.

It was probably not what Martial expected when he signed for United back in September 2015 in a deal with Monaco that was worth £58million.

He has scored 31 goals in 105 appearances for United during his two-and-a-bit seasons at Old Trafford and has developed a reputation for scoring in big games.

Neville added: 'He takes big moments on and obviously has the temperament to play in big games. But come on, let's see it every single week.

'He could be a player that could score 20 goals in 20 games if he really wanted to and strived to be the best.'
