  • Dele admitted his surprise at how easily Tottenham were able to make chances

Tottenham Hotspur beat European champions Real Madrid for the first time in their history to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League on a famous night at Wembley, and England’s Dele Alli inspired the victory with two goals.

Harry Kane returned from injury and Harry Winks and Kieran Trippier also starred in front of England boss Gareth Southgate, meaning it was a homemade triumph as Madrid and a glum Cristiano Ronaldo were torn apart.

‘It was a fantastic performance, we knew if we stuck to the game plan we could do it,’ said Dele after his first Champions League game this season. ‘I’m disappointed I didn’t get a third.’

Two goals in a historic victory over Real were not enough for Dele, who missed another great opening late on. After the game the England international - playing in Europe for the first time this season after a ban - said he was not completely satisfied.

Speaking on Norweigian television channel Viasport, he said: 'I'm disappointed I didn't get the hat-trick to be honest. I had an easy chance at the end from a great ball in by Kieran.

'More importantly the team got the win today. I'm delighted to get the two goals, I was looking forward to getting back into the Champions League after my ban, it's a great result'.

He also admitted his surprise at how easily Tottenham were able to make chances against Real, who have won the Champions League in the last two seasons.

He said: 'We spoke about it after the first game, we couldn't believe the space we had at times at their place. We don't want to just compete with these teams we want to beat them.'

Dele's sentiments were echoed by team mate Christian Eriksen, who also felt Tottenham could have scored more goals.

Eriksen rounded off the eye-catching win by making it 3-0, before Cristiano Ronaldo netted a consolation.

Speaking after the game on BT Sport, Eriksen said: 'We had chances to score more if we had the composure. We need to keep it going, we had to make it up from last week.'
