Everton's miserable run continued on Thursday night as they were dumped out of the Europa League following a lacklustre performance in Lyon.
David Unsworth's side ended the game with 10 men after Morgan Schneiderlin was given his marching orders in the latter stages, but the damage was already done.

Everton are out of the Europa League
88min: Deary me. 'Will somebody stop the damn match!' as WWE commentator JR might say. Even Memphis Depay is popping up to head home crosses now.
86min: Everton need putting out their misery here. Lyon just toying with them now as their Euro exit looms - despite Apollon grabbing an against equaliser Atalana where it has finished 1-1.
83min: Right, Everton's European hopes rely on Apollon grabbing two stoppage time goals against Atalanta. Not even Roy of the Rovers would dare script such a far-fetch scenario.
80min: But since falling behind, Everton have been a total shambles. The mentality in this team needs addressing as Schneiderlin has now been sent off following a silly challenge that results in a yellow card - his second of the game.
77min: Final change for Lyon as Jordan Ferri replaces Tanguy N'Dombele. I would have laughed at you if ten minutes ago you claimed Everton were about to go 2-0 down. This really has come out of nowhere.
76min: As far as Everton's European hopes are concerned, that was all she wrote. A 60-yard pass undoes the Toffees defence, and although Pickford blocks a shot the rebound is squared for Houssem Aouar to tuck into the bottom corner.
74min: In truth that goal is rather harsh on Everton, who have been the better team in this second half. But the Toffees heads have dropped now.
71min: Unsworth responds by sending on Nikola Vasic for Aaron Lennon in Everton's final change as Cornet just misses out on doubling Lyon's lead.
69min: And that is Traore's final touch as he is replaced by Mariano. Everton must find an equaliser in the first 21 minutes.
68min: Seconds after Sigurdsson fires just wide, Lyon pounce - from out of nowhere really.
Schneiderlin wins a tackle in midfield but the ball diverts into the path of Bertrand Traore who takes the ball past a stranded Pickford, who had raced out his box, before rolling home.
As it stands Everton are heading out the Europa League.
65min: Lyon have improved since the changes from both sides but Everton have still carved out the best chances of this half as a Memphis Depay corner is comfortably taken by Jordan Pickford.l
62min: Changes for both teams. First Calvert-Lewin replaces Idrissa Gueye, while Fekir departs to be replaced by Houssem Aouar for Lyon.
60min: On the hour and Everton are preparing a change - it's an attacking one too with Dominic Calvert-Lewin preparing to come on.
57min: Penalty shout for Lyon, and it's certainly up for debate. Mason Holgate lunges at Nabil Fekir inside the box, but in my view the Everton defender JUST catches the ball with his outstretched foot,
Moments later Morgan Schneiderlin is booked for dissent.
54min: This really is much better to see from Everton. They are pressing the hosts all over the pitch now - I just hope they don't get caught on the break by Lyon.
51min: I'm going to have to give David Unsworth's half-time team-talk a good 8/10 judging by the start of the second period. Everton have been the better team and have put more pressure on these six minutes than they did the entire first half.
48min: Idrissa Gueye with a great chance to score for Everton! The ball falls loose inside the Lyon box but following a side-footed effort, Anthony Lopes dives down well to save. I'd go as far and say that is the chance of the match.
Here is part of Everton's problem. Gylfi Sigurdsson is their most advanced player on the pitch yet can hardly get a worthwhile touch near the Lyon penalty box, let alone in it.
The 'false nine' has to constantly drop deep just to find service from the Toffees midfield unwilling or unable to support the Icelandic star. Here is his heat map.

Whatever injury Martina picked up, it looked very serious judging by the careful attention he was given by medical teams that lasted over seven minutes.
It's unclear how it occurred either but the likely injury was caused in how he landed following a battle for a header with Maxwel Cornet where he landed on his back. Either way let's hope for a speedy recovery.
On the pitch, Everton have defended very well but have very rarely looked like grabbing a goal on the break. Set up for a draw unless they show more adventure in the second half.
45+6min: Oh the Lyon fans loved that. Williams clatters into Pickford who was rushing out his box to cut out a loose ball resulting in the two going to ground. Play is stopped by the referee fearing a head collision but both are fairly quick in getting back to their feet.
45+5min: Despite Lyon's overall dominance you do suspect David Unsworth will be the happier of the two managers as we approach half-time.
45+2min: It's been an ok first half for Everton - providing they don't concede in stoppage time of course.
And that was nearly the case as Pickford saves well from Traore's shot fired in from the edge of the box. All Lyon at the moment.
45min: Marcelo fails to find the target following a Lyon cross but with Martina's injury there are going to be seven minutes added on.
42min: Martina is being carried off the pitch having been gently placed on a stretcher and onto a medical buggy. He appears to be in a neck brace as he is driven away. Let's hope he is ok.
Everton bring on Muhamed Besic in his place and he will now fill in at right back with Jonjoe Kenny out on the left.
40min: Concerning scenes here for Everton. Cuco Martina looks like he has been knocked out cold following an aerial challenge with Maxwel Cornet.
The medical teams assisting him look relaxed in treating the full-back, but they are also being very cautious.
37min: Decent stop from Pickford, who leaps high to his left to keep out a Depay free-kick.
35min: News from the other game in this group sees Atalanta taking the lead at Apollon from the penalty spot through Josip Ilicic - meaning Everton really cannot afford to lose now or they are out.
32min: Rafael's previous cross was the sort of ball Everton should be trying to find Sigurdsson with. Instead their latest delivery for the midfielder (forward?) is looped, high and of course sees Gylfi lose out in an aerial battle.
30min: So Lyon take it upon themselves to build an attack. Rafael da Silva turns Lookman a little too easily on the right before sprinting down the flank.
The former Manchester United full-back then crosses low for Fekir inside the box who with a difficult half-volley fires over the bar.
27min: Not much adventure from Everton and that's bad news for Sigurdsson. Most of the passes are 'safe and sideways' and even those are going astray. Gylfi is hardly getting a sniff of a touch and when he does the Everton midfield is reluctant to join him in attack.
24min: Chance for Lyon. A cross floated into the box is headed downwards by Bertrand Traore but it's straight at Jordan Pickford who parries away...
...only as far as Fekir though, whose low shot across goal is also tipped away by the Everton stopper.
21min: That means it's Lookman on the left and Lennon on the right supporting the midfielder who is masquerading as a striker.
Both have started reasonably well, but I am concerned that Lookman is having no support from fellow midfielders when he picks up possession. Often he is having to take on the Lyon defence on his own.
18min: Better from the away side. It's Sigurdsson leading the line, by the way, but as he latches onto an Aaron Lennon knock-on inside the box, his snapshot is blocked clear.
15min: For all of Lyon's large spells of dominance, Everton have defended in an organised fashion.
The Toffees' only real attack has been through a free-kick swung into the box by Gylfi Sigurdsson, with Lyon doing well to head clear.
'Ashley Williams is going to be in for a 'fun' night here. Every time he gets the ball, Lyon's fans are sent into a whistling frenzy...'
Lyon fans of course won't forget Williams' part in causing a huge brawl in the reverse tie.
9min: Still not much action although Lyon are dominating play. Cuco Martina is booked for a foul on Nabil Fekir, with Memphis Depay's back post free-kick just failing to find the target.
'This venue is fit to host a final and that is precisely what it will do next May. The Groupama Stadium is far from full this evening but the noise is still huge and Ashley Williams, in particular, will testify to that.
'After his shoving match with Lyon keeper Anthony Lopes in the first meeting between these sides, he is being loudly booed and whistled every time he touches the ball.'
3min: Everton are in their change strip...which to me looks like their home kit by only a shade or too darker with yellow numbers. Pointless basically.
As I'm focusing on kits and colours, you can pretty much guess what's happened in the first 180 seconds on the pitch. Nothing.

Everton have made the worst ever start by an English team in the Europa League, and it really is looking miserable for them.
So miserable that if they lose tonight and Atalanta avoid defeat at Apollon - the Toffees will be out of the competition.

David Unsworth continues his audition for becoming Everton's full-time boss this evening, but work is also going on behind the scenes at Goodison Park to find a permanent appointment elsewhere.
Big Sam for Meryseyside anyone?
Lyon: Lopes, Da Silva, Marcelo, Diakhaby, Mendy, Tousart, Alvaro, Cornet, Fekir, Depay, Traore.
Subs: Gorgelin, Aouar, Mariano, Ferri, Morel, Marcal, Tete.
Everton: Pickford, Kenny, Williams, Holgate, Martina, Lookman, Schneiderlin, Gueye, Lennon, Beningime, Sigurdsson.
Subs: Robles, Mirallas, Klaassen, Besic, Vlasic, Calvert Lewin, Feeney.
Referee: Orel Grinfeld (Israel)
I've been looking at it for a good 10 minutes and I've decided that Gylfi Sigurdsson is going to lead the line with attacking support on the flanks from Aaron Lennon and Ademola Lookman.
Alternatives include Lookman leading the attack with Sigurdsson out wide. We'll find out soon enough but it all looks a like a jumbled mess.
Everton caretaker manager David Unsworth makes six changes for his side's trip to Lyon including handing a European debut to teenager Beni Baningime.
The midfielder comes into the side along with Cuco Martina, Mason Holgate, Morgan Schneiderlin, Ademola Lookman and Gylfi Sigurdsson as Leighton Baines, Phil Jagielka, Tom Davies, Wayne Rooney, Kevin Mirallas and Dominic Calvert-Lewin drop out the side that lost 2-0 at Leicester City.
It's been a miserable European campaign for Everton so far, but although possible prospects of continental football after Christmas are looking grim, it's not quite over... at least not yet.
Good evening all and welcome to Sportsmail's live coverage of Lyon vs Everton in the Europa League.
Everton travel to Lyon for their fourth Group E clash as they fight to avoid an embarrassing Europa League exit with two matches still to play.
With just one point at the half-way stage of the group phase the Toffees visit France knowing that defeat coupled with Atalanta avoiding a loss against Apollon would end their European hopes for the season.
