  • BBC pundit Alan Shearer says the striker needs to start being more selfish

Romelu Lukaku needs to be more selfish in order to break his barren spell in front of goal, according to BBC pundit Alan Shearer.

The Manchester United star endured another difficult afternoon at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea dominated Jose Mourinho's side.

After Sunday's 1-0 defeat, the 24-year-old has now gone seven games without a goal despite starting the season in electric form.

If he is to get back to his emphatic ways, Lukaku could do worse than listen to the advice from the Premier League's all-time top scorer.

It appeared Shearer was more than willing to offer his comments on the striker's current situation as he appeared as a pundit on BBC's Match of the Day.

He said: 'When you're on a barren spell, forget everything about going out wide, about coming deep, thinking I'm not getting a touch of the ball.

'It's time to be selfish. Width of the 18-yard box, that's what he's got to think about. He isn’t going to score by running into corners.

'Let the people create the chances for you. He's a goal-scorer and he’s getting judged on scoring goals.'

United's forward players did very little in the way of carving out any opportunities for their star striker, perhaps shackled by their added defensive duties.

But Shearer believes dropping back deep to create chances for himself is not the answer.

He continued: 'He's going deep, he's going out wide. He's not helping himself and he's certainly not helping his team.

'It's not his job to go deep and create. Width of the 18-yard box, that's where he's most dangerous and that's where he's going to score goals.'

Fellow pundit and former striker Ian Wright also shared his sympathy for Lukaku and pointed the blame at his creative teammates.

He said: 'I do feel for him. He seems to be making the wrong moves and the chances aren't coming.

'Mkhitaryan had six passes to him today as they're attacking midfielder. That is nowhere near good enough and he needs to look at himself.'

After the defeat at Stamford Bridge, United are now eight points behind league leaders and city rivals Manchester City.

Lukaku will get the chance to rectify his goal drought and close the gap against Newcastle on Saturday.
