The defender has also been ruled out with injury and neither will now play any part in Belgium's upcoming friendly clash with Mexico.

News of Batshuayi's injury will come as a blow to Chelsea, who have been struggling with something of a crisis in recent weeks.

Only recently has big money signing Alvaro Morata returned to action following a lay-off, leaving manager Antonio Conte low on options.

Injuries at Stamford Bridge have become a running theme this season, leading Conte on several occasions to bemoan the lack of depth in his squad and call for reinvestment.

Batshuayi has been assessed by medical staff though an estimate regarding how long he will be out of action for is yet to be delivered.

Commenting on the departure of the striker Belgium manager Roberto Martinez told radio station RTBF: 'When Michy arrived he was in pain.

'He has not trained since the squad met.

'He is out both games and has already returned to Chelsea.'

Despite limited appearances last season Batshuayi has already turned out for Conte's side 12 times this season, showing the extent of Chelsea's options in the attacking area.

Of those appearances the 24-year-old has provided seven goals in total so far, in all competitions.
