Luke Shaw could be offered a break from his torrid time at Manchester United with a January loan to Newcastle United.

Magpies manager Rafa Benitez is said to be interested in a move for the left back, who is seeing his career stutter under Jose Mourinho.

Shaw, who moved to Old Trafford from Southampton for £33million in 2014 - a British record for a teenage player - is looking for regular first-team football.

According to the Mirror, Benitez is looking for a temporary deal for Shaw, who may be keen to take the chance of making a late run for England's 2018 World Cup squad.

Shaw, 22, has played seven times for England and was a first team regular when he first moved to United under Louis van Gaal, but has been pushed to the fringes under Mourinho.

Mourinho, who has been openly critical of Shaw both on and off the pitch, could also be happy to see the player leave Manchester.

A loan to Newcastle - who would struggle to meet any asking price for Shaw but would offer a first team place - would be a good option.

Shaw has played just 47 minutes of first team football this season, in two Carabao Cup substitute appearances, against Burton Albion and Swansea City.

His career has struggled since suffering a horrendous broken leg in a Champions League game against PSV in September 2015.
