Borussia Dortmund set for January move for Manchester United youngster Angel Gomes but face competition from Barcelona

Manchester United starlet Angel Gomes has emerged as a target for Borussia Dortmund in January, according to reports. 

Gomes made his senior debut for United in the final game of last season but has yet to sign a professional contract with the club. 

The 17-year-old's performances for the youth team caught the eye of Barcelona last year but The Sun now report that Dortmund have joined the race for his signature.

Dortmund's policy of signing Europe's best youngsters saw them snap up Jadon Sancho from Manchester City in the summer. 

Like Sancho at City, Gomes has so far refused to sign a professional contract with United and is free to leave for a nominal fee at the end of the season. 

Gomes and Sancho are friends from their time together with the England Under 17s as they helped the Young Lions clinch the World Cup this summer.

Sancho featured in the group stages before returning to Dortmund while Gomes was used sparingly, mostly as a late substitute.

Gomes is one of the brightest young talents to emerge from United's academy in recent seasons, starring as a creative attacking midfielder, though there are concerns over his diminutive stature.

He became the youngest player to play for United since Duncan Edwards in 1953 when he replaced Wayne Rooney as a substitute against Crystal Palace in May. 

Gomes described his debut as a 'dream come true' after he came on aged 16 years and 263 days during the 2-0 win at Old Trafford.

Dortmund are famed for giving youngsters a chance in the first team and the last couple of seasons have seen the likes of Christian Pulisic, Julian Weigl and Dan-Axel Zagadou make their mark at the Signal Iduna Park. 

The Bundesliga side are reportedly looking to move on star man Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after manager Peter Bosz claimed the striker 'ruined everything' in the 4-4 draw with Schalke last time out. 

Dortmund had raced into a 4-0 lead against Schalke in the Revierberby but Aubameyang was sent off with the score at 4-2 before a late capitulation from the home side saw the clash end all square.
