Arsene Wenger left fuming with his defence as Arsenal hit on counter by Manchester United in 3-1 defeat

Arsene Wenger could hardly disguise his fury as Arsenal's defensive Achilles heel saw their 100 per cent home record end with a 3-1 defeat against Manchester United.

Terrible blunders by Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi put United 2-0 up at The Emirates inside 12 minutes and Arsenal couldn't fight their way back despite having 33 shots at David de Gea's goal.

The embarrassment was particularly acute for Koscielny who last week tweeted a picture of the Arsenal defenders' shirts with the words 'STOP' after their run of three clean sheets.

Wenger was in no mood to joke about the latest capitulation though: 'I thought the performance was good, we were not decisive enough at the back. We put ourselves in a very difficult position.

'From the start you have to dictate your stength in duels from the back. Our concentration was not sharp enough.

'Our spirit was outstanding but we were not efficient enough because we did not start well enough.'

Koscielny carelessly passed to Antonio Valencia in the build-up for United's opener after four minutes and then Mustafi was tackled by Jesse Lingard before he added a second after 12 minutes.

Mustafi then limped off to be replaced by Alex Iwobi, though a cynic would suggest he was ashamed rather than embarrassed, and certainly Wenger didn't seem sympathetic towards the German defender when he said afterwards: 'I don't know what is wrong with him.

'When you have 33 shots, it means your dominance was top class. But I am angry because I have nothing to show for it.'

Two-goal Lingard revealed that United had gone in with a plan of upsetting the Arsenal defence. 'We had to press this team high with them having three at the back. Their mistakes cost them and we punished them. It's a massive win,' he said
