Chris Smalling saw comedian Mo Gilligan in action on Sunday with wife Sam as the Manchester United defender enjoyed some down time away from football.

The couple posed for a photo with Gilligan, which was posted on Sam's Instagram account and captioned: 'Great night out with the squad watching Mo Gilligan who was fantastic as always'.

Gilligan, also known as Mo The Comedian, has grown in popularity this year with a series of sketches released on his social media accounts.

Sam said Gilligan was 'brilliant as always' after the couple saw the stand-up comedian in action

Smalling was celebrating after United's impressive 3-1 Premier League victory over Arsenal on Saturday evening at the Emirates.

The 28-year-old played as part of a back three for Jose Mourinho's side, alongside Victor Lindelof and Marcos Rojo, as they withstood a barrage of pressure from the home side to emerge with the three points.

United were 2-0 up after 11 minutes through Antonio Valencia and Jesse Lingard before goalkeeper David De Gea made a series of saves to deny Arsenal at the end of the first half.

The Gunners finally made the breakthrough when Alexandre Lacazette scored but United hit Arsenal on the counter with Lingard's second of the game.

United held on for the win despite Paul Pogba's sending off though the red card means the midfielder will be out for the Manchester derby on Sunday.

Manchester City meanwhile extended the gap between themselves and rivals United back to eight points with their 13th straight league win on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola's men were indebted to another late winner, their third in three league matches, as David Silva struck in the 83rd minute to secure a comeback victory over David Moyes' West Ham.

Smalling is looking to break into England's World Cup squad for Russia 2018 after missing out in manager Gareth Southgate's most recent selection.
