Manchester United are taking up their option to extend the contract of goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.
The 24-year-old is on a season-long loan at Championship promotion hopefuls Aston Villa, who are keen to make the deal permanent.
However, Johnstone was due to become a free agent in the summer and United have protected their asset by automatically extending his terms until 2019 owing to a clause in his contract.

United chiefs have taken similar action already with Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw and Ashley Young. Juan Mata and Daley Blind are expected to follow.
Johnstone has been watched closely by other Premier League clubs during his spell at Villa and Steve Bruce expects competition for his signature.
He could have left for free in the summer but United's move ensures they will receive a fee if he does make a permanent exit from Old Trafford.
