David Luiz has been hard at work in the gym as he looks to force his way back into Chelsea's starting XI after he eventually recovers from his knee injury.

The Brazilian centre back posted a short video on his Instagram story on Wednesday of himself running on an anti-gravity treadmill at Chelsea's Cobham training base.

And the intense exercise clearly took it out of the 30-year-old after he posted a selfie of himself laying down sweating.

BENEFITS OF ANTI-GRAVITY TREADMILL

The treadmill allows you to train or exercise harder and for longer (without the risk of injury).

It also gives you the ability to speed up rehabilitation from illness, injury or surgery by getting moving a lot sooner, in a pain-free environment.

Luiz is desperate to return to action quickly after being usurped in the heart of the Chelsea defence by 21-year-old Andreas Christensen.

The Brazil international has dropped down the pecking order under Antonio Conte after falling out with the Italian following Chelsea's 3-0 Champions League defeat by Roma in October.

Luiz watched Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid from the sidelines on Tuesday night as Conte's men ended up finishing second in their Champions League group.

The result means that the Stamford Bridge outfit can only face one of Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain or Besiktas in the last-16 of the competition.

But speaking after Tuesday's game, Conte claimed that the biggest obstacle in Chelsea's bid for Champions League glory is the Premier League - and not Barcelona or PSG.

'With five teams to go through to the next round means the level of this league is very high,' said Conte, speaking ahead of Liverpool's bid to progress on Wednesday night and with Manchester City, United and Tottenham already confirmed group winners.

'Don't forget here this season is very tough. You have to play a lot of games, but when you arrive at the final stage to play for quarter-finals, semi-finals the English teams have a lot of games in their legs.

'For this reason I think it could be problematic to win (the Champions League).'
