However, now he is on the verge of signing and joining former Hoffenheim team-mates Niklas Sule and Sebastian Rudy at Bayern as Jupp Heynckes looks to give Robert Lewandowski competition for places up front.

'We don't have to lie about it. I'm expecting this will happen in the next week or two,' Nagelsmann revealed following Hoffenheim's 1-1 Europa League draw against Ludogorets on Thursday.

Wagner is a product of the Bayern Munich academy but managed only eight appearances for the club in 2007-08 before moving to MSV Duisburg the following season.

He ended up at Hoffenheim in 2016 after fleeting spells with Werder Bremen, Kaiserslautern, Hertha Berlin and Darmstadt.

Wagner enjoyed a stellar first campaign at Rhein-Neckar-Arena last term, scoring 11 Bundesliga goals as Hoffenheim booked their place in the Champions League.

The forward, who was part of Germany's triumphant Confederations Cup squad, has netted six goals in all competitions so far in 2017-18.
